Hummels is currently captain of Borussia Dortmund for this season

Bild claims that Mats Hummels may be playing his final football season professionally and may decide to retire at the end of the current campaign.

According to some close to the defender, this season will probably be his last because his club contract expires the following summer.

Even if he is no longer Dortmund's captain, Hummels is still an essential member of the team since he not only contributes background but is also one of the few players who have won multiple awards, which means he brings a winning mindset that doesn't currently exist at Dortmund.

Dortmund would strive to fill the void left by Hummels' likely exit, especially given that Marco Reus has been given less playing time this year.

The 34-year-old remains crucial for Dortmund on the field as well. His two goals at the weekend's match helped Dortmund defeat Freiburg 4-2; it is unclear if he will play against the significantly better PSG squad in midweek.

On Saturday, Borussia Dortmund defeated Freiburg 4-2, resuming their winning ways. Mats Hummels saved the day for his team by scoring two goals, becoming the most senior player in BVB history.

The Black and Yellows' victory was far from easy, and their showing definitely left much to regret.

And Hummels has now called attention to one of the key problems that, in his opinion, has impacted the team for a while. The seasoned centre-back was also eager to stress that the entire squad is responsible for this, not just the midfielders.

The lack of midfield discipline exhibited by Borussia Dortmund have been discussed for a while. The problem was also obvious in the previous season. Despite the team's revamp in the middle of the park over the summer, those in control have yet to come up with a solution.
