These showstoppers made exceptional saves throughout the year

In one of the most exciting FIFA World Cup final in Qatar, Emi Martinez’s save in extra time business end will be remembered for the long time. Martinez was brilliant for Argentina in the Penalty shootout too. The year of 2022 has seen much brilliance in the nets. From Martinez to Ramsdale to Moroccan Yassine Bounou there have been many names in goalkeeping with some brilliant performances throughout the year. As the year of 2022 has come to end we have picked the Top 10 Goalkeepers of the year with some stunning saves with gloves and performances to help their team remain at top or become a champion.

10. Aaron Ramsdale – Arsenal & England

Just an year ago Arsenal with a new hope signed up with Aaron Ramsdale for next four season till 2025. Ramsdale signing literally brought some good changes and luck in favour of Gunners. Arsenals are currently at the pole position in Premier League. All thanks to Ramsdale’s complementary brilliance with their top scorers Odegard, Martinelli (6), Bukayo Saka & Gabriel Jesus (5). Aaron Ramsdale this season has conceded 14 goals this season for Arsenal, 12 in Premier Legaue and 2 in Europa League. Ramsdale got 8 clean sheets under his name in 17 appearances for Arsenal this year. He did not get much opportunity to play for England.

9. Dominik Livakovic – Dinamo Zagreb & Croatia

Croatian wall Dominik Livakovic was crucial for Croatia in FIFA World Cup 2022 knockouts. Livakovic knocked out Japan and Brazil in Round of 16 & Quarter Finals respectively with Penalty shootout saves. Long term member of Dinamo Zagreb, Livakovic has been great with gloves for his club as well. Livakovic this year has appeared in 40 games conceded 43 goals and got 8 clean sheets under his name. Livakovic in Croatia League has been dominating for long now. This season he has played 16 games conceding only 16 with 2 clean sheets.

8. Yassine Bounou – Sevilla & Morocco

Moroccan Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou is one of the main reasons behind Atlas Lions success in FIFA World Cup 2022. Morocco became the first team of African continent to play in World Cup semifinal. Yassine Bounou held strikers like Eden Hazard, Alvaro Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo at bay during the tournament. In 6 World Cup games he conceded only three games in 2 games, one vs Canada and 2 vs France in Semi finals. Bounou’s World Cup performance was top class and that made him enter among Top 10 Goalkeepers of the year 2022.

7. Wojciech Szczesny – Juventus & Poland

2022 has been brilliant year for Polish Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Szczesny had a good outing Serie – A for Juventus and for Poland in FIFA World Cup 2022. Juventus currently placed at third position in the Italian league with 9 wins and 31 points. What matters is how brilliant their defense and goalkeeper been thorough the league, Szczesny in 9 games he appeared for Juventus this season got 7 clean sheets. Similarly in the World Cup 2022 He did well enough to earn praise for his glove work.

6. Unai Simon – Athletic Bilbao & Spain

Though Spain had a tough outing once again in the FIFA World Cup, Unai Simon individually had a few good games to remember. Spain lost to Morocco in Pre Quarter Finals on Penalty shootout. In UEFA Nations League, Unai Simon had a good run too with total of 3 clean sheets in 6 games under his name. While in LaLiga, Simon appeared in 14 games for Athletic Bilbao conceding only 14 games and bagged 6 clean sheets in the first half of the season. Unai Simon was preferred over David De Gea only for his brilliant performances this season.

5. Emiliano Martinez – Aston Villa & Argentina

World Cup 2022 hero and one player who held his nerves during crucial time with gloves, Emi Martinez is star goalkeeper of the year 2022. Emiliano Martine after opening game loss against Saudi Arab pulled himself back in the business with stunning saves in the tournament. His final minute save against France in Final and Penalty shootout saves made Argentina third time World Champion. In 23 games he played this season he has conceded 25 goals and got 6 clean sheets under his name.

4. Gianluigi Donnarumma – PSG & Italy

Italy’s Euro Cup hero goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has continued his form in current season as well.  In Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain is in dominating position with 13 victories in 15 games. Donnarumma in the French league has conceded only 8 goals in 15 outings. With 54 shots faced, he has saved 45 of them to give his team a dominating result. In 15 appearances in the league 23-year-old Donnarumma got 9 clean sheets under his name. In National League he got 3 clean sheets in 6 games he appeared for Italy.

3. Ederson – Manchester City & Brazil

In Premier League, Manchester City’s recent success has been credited to their Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson. Ederson has been a pillar for City in Premier League. In last 5season since Ederson came in City had bagged Premier League trophy for 4 times. In 2022-23 season Ederson is just duplicating his past performances. Ederson in this season has made scoring difficult for strikers in UEFA Champions League and Premier League bagging 9 clean sheets in 18 appearances and conceding only 14 goals. Ederson played only one game in FIFA World Cup 2022.

2. Thibaut Courtois – Real Madrid & Belgium

Part of Belgium’s golden generation Thibaut Courtois may have missed the opportunity to repeat 2018 performance in FIFA World Cup 2022 yet he had a brilliant run in La Liga and in Champions League. Courtois may have missed to get a clean sheet in La Liga but conceded fewer goals in the league. In 10 games he faced 38 shots and saved 26 of them. In total 20 games this season he conceded 19 goals and got 5 clean sheets.

1. Alisson Becker – Liverpool & Brazil

Brazil was considered as hot favourite in FIFA World Cup 2022. Alisson with their front line was expected to be the team of the tournament. Unfortunately Brazil lost to Croatia in Quarter Final. Alisson since he joined Liverpool has become almost unbeaten as a Goalkeeper. Overall this season Alisson’s stats also suggest the same. He has played 25 games overall for Liverpool and Brazil and conceded only 25 with 9 clean sheets, 4 in Premier League, 3 in Champions League and 2 in FIFA World Cup.
