Veteran defender Anas Edathodika signs for Gokulam Kerala
Anas comes from a 1.5 years break from Indian football
After a hiatus of 1.5 years, the experienced Indian defender Anas Edathodika is set to return to the football pitch, signing a deal with former I-League champions, Gokulam Kerala FC. This surprise move marks a turning point in the 36-year-old's career, who was last seen in action for Jamshedpur FC in the 2021-22 Indian Super League (ISL) season, making only four appearances and playing a mere 33 minutes.
Anas Edathodika's decision to return to the professional football arena comes as a welcome surprise for fans who have long admired his contributions to the Indian football scene. After a brief stint with Jamshedpur FC in the 2021-22 edition of the ISL, where he struggled with injuries and a lack of game time, the defender decided to take a sabbatical from the sport. During this period, he was all set to join the Kerala Police duty, a move that he deemed necessary after promises of employment by the Government of Kerala
However, things didn't go as planned. Anas Edathodika alleged that despite P. Vijayan's assurance of a job in the Kerala Police, he was not offered the opportunity he had been promised. This situation left the veteran footballer in a state of uncertainty and prompted him to consider a return to the football pitch.
In the 36-year-old defender, Gokulam Kerala FC has found a seasoned professional who can provide much-needed experience and leadership to the squad. Anas Edathodika's experience in Indian football is invaluable, particularly in a league that continues to evolve and grow. His presence in the Gokulam Kerala backline is expected to bolster their defensive stability and add depth to the squad, potentially making them stronger contenders for the upcoming season.
Speaking on his move to the Malabarians he quoted, "When I heard about Gokulam’s plans, it looked exciting. I have been training with them for almost a month and they have made an exciting squad this season”
Anas Edathodika's influence on the Indian national team during Stephen Constantine's tenure as the head coach cannot be understated. He was a mainstay in the national team's defense and played a pivotal role in India's international campaigns. His return to the domestic league is not only significant for Gokulam Kerala but also for the broader Indian football community.
The signing of Anas Edathodika is expected to generate a wave of enthusiasm among Gokulam Kerala fans, who are eager to see their team qualify for top division of Indian Indian football. His leadership qualities, experience, and knowledge of the game will undoubtedly benefit the club as they aim to compete at the highest level once again.
