Five fan favourite foreigners to have played for Mumbai City FC
In just 33 appearances, Diaz has already scored 21 goals and provided 10 assists
Mumbai City FC have established themselves as the team to beat in the Indian Super League (ISL). Having won the Indian Super League (ISL) league title twice and the playoffs once in the last four seasons, they have become India’s premier club under the City Football Group’s management.
Over the years, the Islanders have also welcomed some blockbuster foreign players to their club. What started with the ‘marquee player’ to signing other quality foreign stars who are proven in Indian football, their overseas contingency has mostly been really solid.
However, some particular overseas players are definitely more popular among the fan base than all the others. Here, we look at Mumbai City’s top-5 fan-favorite foreigners.
5. Jorge Pereyra Diaz
The Argentine striker has been a hit among the Islanders faithful since arriving last year. In just 33 appearances (across all competitions), Diaz has already scored 21 goals and provided 10 assists.
He’s tormented defenders with his clever movement and ruthless goal-scoring ability. Diaz’s fun-loving nature and energetic style has made him beloved among the fans and fuelled his good form at Mumbai.
4. Lucian Goian
The Romanian centre-back was brought to Indian Football to Mumbai City and became deeply attached with the club and the city itself. The Romanian centre-back was a warrior in the defence for the Islanders, being willing to put his body on the line to save them from trouble and loved bullying forwards.
Goian made 53 appearances for Mumbai Cty, becoming the club captain because of his leadership skills as well. While he might not have won anything with the Islanders, Goian never-say-die attitude and passionate playing style made him a beloved figure among the faithful.
3. Greg Stewart
Greg Stewart was poached from Jamshedpur FC by the Islanders last summer, and for good reason. The Scottish forward has been a revelation under Des Buckingham, being a huge inspiration behind them winning the ISL league title last season.
In just 36 appearances for Mumbai City so far, Stewart has scored 15 goals and delivered 16 assists. He has become a major fan-favourite with his exciting playing style and ability to find something special for Mumbai City time and again.
2. Mourtada Fall
Mourtada Fall’s dominant performances for FC Goa urged Mumbai City to make an ambitious move to sign him in 2023. In the three years that he spent with the Islanders, the Senegalese giant provided a lot of joy to the fans.
He helped maintain a really solid backline for Mumbai City and bullied all kind of forwards that threatened them. Fall won the ISL league shield twice, as well as the playoff title. In his three seasons, Fall made 68 appearances across all competitions, scoring 8 goals and getting the fans singing his name.
1. Ahmed Jahouh
Morrocan midfielder Ahmed Jahouh was also brought to Mumbai City by Carles Cuadrat in 2020 and instantly transitioned into a fan favorite for the Islanders after infuriating him during his days at FC Goa. Jahouh’s excellent ability to control games from a deeper midfield role helped implement Cuadrat’s style perfectly.
Fans also loved his aggressiveness and passion shown during games, as he was never shy to clatter opponents with rough tackles and make last-ditch challenges to avert danger. Jahouh won the ISL league title twice with Mumbai and made 69 appearances for them. He might play for Odisha FC now, but his amazing work at Mumbai City made him a huge favorite among the fan base.
