The Liverpool centre-back has called out English football for their busy schedule
When asked about his opinion on playing an excessive number of games, Virgil van Dijk was subjected to a bizarre question about salary concessions. The outcome was as you could expect.
The Liverpool captain has been extremely open about the issue of players being overplayed and how it affects their fitness negatively over an extended period of time.
Van Dijk is crucial to Liverpool and his nation, and it is uncommon that he is given a respite. However, some people are made to assume that the money players receive mutes any discussion on the subject.
“In England, we think the schedules are too busy. Players are well paid but this should never be to the detriment of our health,” Van Dijk said during a presser conference ahead of the Netherlands’ match against France.
“We have to play more and more matches. As players we should start saying something, contribute to a solution.”
However, the Reds' No. 4 did not agree with this notion when he made remarks about the demanding English football calendar and how players "should start saying something."
In response to Van Dijk's remarks, journalist Valentijn Driessen questioned the centre-back if he would be willing to forgo some of his pay in exchange for a less hectic schedule.
It seems strange to press a player so relentlessly about their earnings when they are worried about performing too many matches and thus limiting their career.
So, as more games are added to the schedule, do they receive a pay raise? No, we believe.
