Many top players have donned the list for Indian football team.

India, often regarded as one of the football giants in the World, has a rich and storied history in the sport. Yet, the current scenario of Indian football is something else.

A country that once dominated now struggles to keep up its prestige, even in Asian football. The ride has been bumpy, both on and off the field, as currently at the most crucial juncture for the development and resurgence of Indian football.

Through the decades, the country has churned out legendary footballers who proudly represented India in the international arena.

Their exploits reveal a nation in whose veins run a deep love for football, together with a promise of excellence that might soon make them a force to reckon with in international football. This article drives through the history of Indian football and pinpoints those distinguished individuals who have captained the Indian football team.

The Golden Era

The post-independence period truly proved to be the turning point of Indian football. Independent India made its maiden international appearance in the 1948 London Olympics, captained by Talimeren Ao. He led from the front as India showed its glimpses in football, and his contribution went beyond the footballing arena when he went on to become an eminent physician.

Players like Sailen Manna and Chuni Goswami defined the golden era of Indian football. The defensive strongman Manna had captained India to its maiden gold medal at the 1951 Asian Games, while his leadership played a crucial role in establishing India as a powerhouse in Asian football. Another such all-round sportsman was Goswami, who guided India to triumph in the 1962 Asian Games and won a silver medal at the 1964 Asia Cup.

Transition and Challenges

The 1970s and 1980s were the transitional years of Indian football. The team, though occasionally performing well, failed to retain the glory of the earlier decades. It was during this time that captains such as Shabbir Ali and Gurdev Singh Gill came forward. Ali is considered among the best strikers of India, lending consistency and a leading role to the team upfront, while Gill brought in some solidity in the backline.

The first goalkeeper to lead the national team, Brahmanand Sankhwalkar was a bundle of commitment. As captain in the 1980s, he showed that goalkeeping was an integral part of football and he is still remembered as one of the legends of Indian football.

The Present Era

In the 1990s, starting with the likes of VP Sathyan, under whose captaincy the team secured a victory in the 1995 SAFF Games, India also saw one of her most charismatic forwards in Bhaichung Bhutia. Sikkimese Sniper represented India through a gamut of victories that included a triumph in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup.

Sunil Chhetri succeeded Bhaichung Bhutia and has been a kind of transformer in Indian football. He has been inspirational for the national team, and being its all-time leading scorer, coupled with being one of the most capped players of the country, he has many times risen to the occasion whenever called upon.

His work helped India qualify for several AFC Asian Cups, keeping the country competitive in Asian football. Currently, the national team is struggling to find its rhythm after Sunil Chhetri’s retirement, with Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Subashish Bose on the latest list.
