This is Mohun Bagan’s first loss in this season’s AFC Cup
Mohun Bagan Super Giant suffered their first loss of the 2023/24 AFC Cup group stages, going down to a 2-1 defeat to Bashundhara Kings at the Bashundhara Kings Arena, Dhaka on Tuesday (November 7). The Mariners actually started the game in bright fashion, taking the lead in the 17th minute after an instinctive strike from Liston Colaco.
However, they dropped back and invited pressure after that to allow the hosts to get back into the game. A stunning long-range effort from Miguel Ferreira in the 44th minute put the game level heading into half-time. The Mariners failed to hit top gear in the second half and kept inviting the Kings onto them and were made to pay for that as captain Robinho scored a clever goal in the 80th minute to win it for his side.
With this result, the Mariners have fallen to second place in Group D and need to win their next two games and hope the Bangladeshi side drops points in order to qualify for the knockout rounds. Here are the Mohun Bagan SG Player Ratings for the game.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant Player Ratings
Vishal Kaith – 6.5
Kaith was sharp in his goal and smart in coming off his line to make clearances too. Made a few clutch saves to keep away Bashundhara’s efforts and frustrate them, but was unable to do much about either goal.
Brendan Hamill – 5.5
Hamill was pretty composed on the right and covered well for Manvir. Read the moves well to make some important clearances, but then did undid all his good work by being caught horribly out of position before the second goal.
Hector Yuste – 5.0
Yuste was again troubled by Dori’s movement but seemingly got better as the game progressed. Got himself in the key defensive areas, making seven clearances before making a poor error in allowing Robinho’s shot to go through him for his goal.
Subashish Bose – 6.5
The Mohun Bagan SG captain was quite proactive on the left side of a defensive three, covering a lot of ground to close down the spaces. Made six possession recoveries and three clearances, while his forward passing was much better.
Manvir Singh – 5.0
Manvir was unable to create much from the right and fluffed some of the shooting opportunities that he managed to get at the end of. Not the sharpest defensively either and was often bypassed by Bashundhara winger Robinho.
Anirudh Thapa – 4.0
Thapa struggled in that deeper midfield role and failed to do much to restrict Bashundhara’s long-range efforts. He couldn’t make a tackle or effective block and was often outwitted by the opposition midfielders. Caught in awkward positions for both goals and had little creative threat either.
Sahal Abdul Samad – 5.5
Samad was troubled by the Bashundhara midfielders and didn’t exactly get the most space to manoeuvre in the central areas. He managed to launch some shots that didn’t really threaten the goalkeeper and was unable to create anything significant.
Liston Colaco – 7.5
Colaco showcased impressive where-with-all in scoring the opener, getting in the right place at the right time to power a shot into the back of the net. Troubled the keeper with a few more efforts and was defensively pretty decent too with six possession recoveries.
Hugo Boumous – 7.5
Boumous was at his menacing best in the creative aspect and caused Bashundhara a lot of problems, especially in the first half. He created five goal-scoring chances and was actually defensively pretty nice too, but not exactly rewarded by his teammates.
Armando Sadiku – 6.0
The tenacious forward worked hard throughout until the hour-mark, tracking back to help his midfielders. Was a bit of a pest at times with his clever movement and forced a great save after a powerful shot in the first half.
Jason Cummings – 5.0
Cummings started the game sharply and was involved in the opener, putting in a nice cross that the goalkeeper fluffed. But then missed a huge scoring chance after that and lost his clinical edge in the second half.
Substitutes
Glan Martins – 5.5
Failed to really add much protection to his backline after coming on or help improve the Mariners’ attacking threat.
Asish Rai – N/R
Could not really create anything prominent with his crossing.
Kiyan Nassiri – N/R
Looked sharp in his late cameo, but unable to impact the result.
