AFC Cup 2023-24: Mohun Bagan vs Odisha FC - Build-up

Mohun Bagan Super Giant are determined to get back to winning ways in the AFC Cup when they host Odisha FC at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday, November 27. The Mariners suffered a shocking loss to Bashundhara Kings in the last matchday and now have to win their remaining games, while hoping the Bangladeshi side drop points, to move forward to the knockout rounds.

Odisha FC, on the other hand, also have a chance of making it past the group stages and only sit one point behind the top spot. They have everything to play for in the remaining games, and need to win their last two games. This clash won’t be like an ordinary Indian Super League (ISL) league stage one, but rather be treated as a final by both teams in desperate need of a big win.

All through the course of this season, Juan Ferrando has kept insisting that Mohun Bagan's primary objective is to go far into the AFC Cup this season. They are now under the threat of getting knocked out in the group stages itself. The Mariners have to at least win their last two games and then hope luck gives them a helping hand.

Not getting into the knockout rounds with a squad of this calibre will be embarrassing and gutting for the Mariners. They need a big win against Odisha to regain their momentum in the continental competition. A draw or a loss can not only be a disappointing result, but might end their AFC Cup knockout dreams once and for all.

Sergio Lobera was roped in by Odisha FC to help them challenge strongly in the major competition. That involves putting on an admirable fight and ousting the odds in Asia. Despite a poor start in the group stages, two huge wins over Maziya have allowed the Juggernauts to get right back into contention for knockout qualification.  

A win against this shaken Mohun Bagan side can do wonders. They could learn from the Mariners’ last game about how to hurt them and outwit them to get a win. A draw or a loss could, however, effectively end their hopes of making it to the knockout rounds – so Lobera's side need to consider this as a major must-win knockout game than a r
