Des Buckingham started his playing career at Oxford United.
Oxford United FC are on the brink of a significant coaching change, with reports suggesting that Des Buckingham is set to take the reins as the new head coach. The club has reportedly reached an agreement with Mumbai City, securing Buckingham's services.
Des Buckingham, a familiar name for Oxford fans, began his journey through the club's ranks as a player. Although his playing career didn't extend to the professional level, he found his calling in coaching and teaching at a local school. Buckingham's coaching prowess became evident when he joined Chris Wilder's backroom staff at Oxford United.
Buckingham's coaching journey took him across continents, starting with coaching roles at Wellington Phoenix. He then made a move to Stoke City as an assistant coach for their U-23s, showcasing his commitment to developing young talent.
In New Zealand, Buckingham achieved remarkable success as the assistant manager for the national U-20 side. His leadership led the team to victory in the 2018 OFC U-19 Championship and a memorable performance in the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Joining the City Football Group, Buckingham made waves in Australia. In his inaugural season, he guided Melbourne City to their first-ever A-League trophy, claiming both the A-League Premiers Plate and the A-League Grand Final.

Buckingham's contributions did not go unnoticed, as he was honored as the Coach of the Year by the FPAI in May 2023.
As the news of Des Buckingham's potential return to Oxford United spreads, fans and football enthusiasts alike eagerly await official confirmation.
