The I-league is back with its 17th edition this year. The league has become much more competitive as the winner will get a chance to get promoted to the top tier league of Indian Football, the Indian Super League (ISL).
This season has been a high scoring affair until with just one goalless draw in 20 games. After four games, Kolkata Giants Mohammedan Sporting Club are comfortably sitting at the top of table having won three games and drawn one.
A key reason behind Mohammedan Sporting's top run of form is their goalkeeper Padam Chhetri. Hailing from Meghalaya, Chhetri has earned a name for himself with his heroics under the bar for the historic club.
What did Andrey Chernyshov say?
Mohammedan Sporting's head coach Andrey Chernyshov was in all praise for his players as they put up a strong performance against Delhi FC in their last game despite going down to nine men.
The Russian tactician said that his goalkeeper was terrific against Delhi FC. he further added that the other players also showed toughness and he is proud of his boys.
“Padam has been terrific throughout the game, the boys showed their real mentality and toughness with 9-men down and we're proud of our boys. At the end of the day, it's all about the positive result,” he asserted.
What happened in the game?
It was a clash between two undefeated sides in the I-league. Mohammedan had won two of three games while Delhi had a win and draw to their name. The game began with both sides hungry to score a goal and the breakthrough came from an own goal from Gurtej Singh in the fourth minute of the game.
A few minutes later Mohammedan SC’s Lalremsanga Fanai doubled his side’s advantage. After sometime, Mohammedan’s midfielder Mirjalol Kasimov was sent off by the referee before Alexis Gomez was shown a second yellow card and given his marching orders. A couple of red cards meant that the Kolkata based side were down to nine men.
But, despite going down to nine men, they held their shape very well and denied Delhi FC from capitalising on their number advantage. However, they couldn’t keep a clean sheet as Delhi FC’s Bali Gagandeep found the back of the net in the 98th minute.
