Kerala Blasters boss Ivan Vukomanovic expects a tough outing against Chennaiyin FC.
The looming ISL 2023-24 fixture between Kerala Blasters and Chennaiyin FC sparks anticipation, with the former eyeing a leapfrog over FC Goa in the standings. The Kerala Blasters’ head coach Ivan Vukomanović and defender Miloš Drinčić recently shared insights at the press conference ahead of their upcoming match against Chennaiyin. As they prepare to face Owen Coyle’s army, discussions unfolded about strategies, player performances, and their standing in the league.
Chennai’s defensive vulnerabilities & Kerala’s offensive approach
Addressing the defensive struggles of Chennaiyin and the imperative to score more goals for a shot at the top spot, Ivan Vukomanović emphasized a nuanced perspective. He remarked, “I don’t believe so. When a team concedes a few goals, the next game becomes an opportunity to address specific issues. Our clashes with Chennai have always been challenging, forming a spicy Southern Derby.
“Tomorrow’s match anticipates toughness, physicality, and intense duels – a typical encounter between these clubs. Previous standings or matches don’t define our current standing, and every game, especially at home, proves to be tough. We expect a challenging game tomorrow,” he added.
Patience with striker Kwame Peprah
Responding to questions about the goal-scoring form of striker Kwame Peprah, Vukomanović reiterated the player’s value to the team beyond goals. “Kwame is a valuable player who is physically strong and contributes significantly to the team. While goals may be lacking currently, his ability to hold the ball and facilitate other players is crucial. We have confidence that the goals will come. He’s a great team player, and we stand by him.”
Table-topping triumph & motivation
With Kerala Blasters currently holding a prominent position in the ISL table, the Serbian expressed satisfaction. “It feels good to be among the top teams. Our aim, since our arrival two and a half years ago, has been to build a strong team aiming for the top spots. Despite challenges like injuries, the positive start motivates us to continue our momentum.”
Future prospects & unpredictability in the ISL
Considering the evolving potential of teams as they navigate AFC Cup and other commitments, Ivan Vukomanović reflected on the ISL’s unpredictable nature. He emphasized, “In my experience over the last two and a half years, anything is possible in this league. As teams find rhythm, gain confidence, and reach their full potential, the dynamics can change. The unpredictability of ISL adds to its beauty – any team can beat any other team. Our focus is on maintaining our positive start and adapting to the evolving challenges of the season.”
Consistency & versatility in Kerala Blasters’ performance
In evaluating the team’s consistent performance, Ivan Vukomanović credited their pre-season efforts and the competitive spirit among players. “The consistency we’ve maintained this season stems from our efforts during pre-season, focusing on acquiring specific player profiles. As the team becomes more consistent, our quality in training improves, which enhances every aspect of our game,” he said.
“The competitive spirit among the players pushes everyone to fight for their place, creating a positive problem for me as a coach: having options and versatility. We now have the luxury to adapt tactics based on our opponents, making us a more diverse and sometimes unpredictable team. This variation allows us to approach games defensively or with a pressing style, contributing to our continuous improvement and potential surprises for our opponents,” he added.
International breaks and strategic reflection
The maestro also emphasized the importance of breaks in the league for team development and recovery. “The breaks during the league, like the international breaks, offer teams valuable time to settle down, build camaraderie among players, allow coaches to strategize and improve, and facilitate the return of injured players. These breaks provide essential moments for reflection, improvement, and overall enhancement of the league.”
Miloš Drinčić’s role & goal-scoring triumph
Drinčić, despite his defensive role, expressed joy in scoring a crucial goal in the previous outing. He mentioned, “Scoring that goal, especially in a home match with a packed stadium, was an incredible feeling. While my primary role is defensive, I aim to contribute to the team in any way possible. I’m proud of the clean-sheets we’ve achieved, which is crucial for me as a defender. If opportunities arise for me to score, I’ll gladly take them, but my focus remains on defending and supporting the team in every aspect.”
Miloš Drinčić, reflecting on the fan support, praised the incredible atmosphere created by the Kerala Blasters’ faithful. “The fans provide immense support, boosting our energy. Being in a top position on the table feels fantastic, and I hope this positivity continues.”
Speaking about Drinčić’s impact, Ivan Vukomanović highlighted his multifaceted role. “Miloš’ quality as a defender impacting the attack was evident from the beginning. His competitiveness, strength, and goal-scoring ability add immense value,” he stated.
