The SAFF Club Championship is expected to be held in the middle of 2024.

The 2024 SAFF Club Championship which is slated to be held next year will feature 16 teams in total, from India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. The championship is scheduled to commence in mid-2024, with matches being held at both home and away venues.

According to the latest report, there has been a revision in the number of teams participating in the competition. Initially, it was stated that two teams from India, Bangladesh and Maldives would be taking part, along with one team from other countries.

However, the updated information reveals that the total number of teams has now been increased to 16. This will include four teams each from India and Bangladesh, three teams from Maldives and one team each from Pakistan, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.

Which club will represent the country?

The primary concern revolves around identifying the clubs that will represent the nation at the SAFF Club Championship. Given that the ISL Trophy winners and League Shield winners are already partaking in the AFC competition, the task of selecting the remaining clubs becomes significantly challenging for the AIFF.

The I-League clubs might contend to participate in the championship. However, the final outcome is contingent upon the willingness and interest of the clubs in taking part.

There are also advantages and disadvantages of participating in the league. While having more matches can allow teams to assess the skills of their substitute players, excessive playtime may also increase the risk of injuries for the players and their clubs involved, which might affect their game of play in their upcoming fixtures.

In the meantime, due to the absence of a professional league in Pakistan, Afghan Club Chaman, Muslim FC and Baloch FC Nushki will participate in a tri-series and the winner of the series will earn a spot in the 2024 SAFF Club Championship.
