Al Hilal vs Al Nassr: Head-to-Head record
One of the oldest derbies in the history of Asian football
In their quest to maintain their unbeaten run in the league, both arch-rivals are poised to clash with more than just pride on the line. This highly anticipated showdown represents a pivotal moment for both teams, extending beyond mere bragging rights.
The match serves as a platform for these titans of football to showcase their resilience and determination, aiming not just for glory but also signalling their intent to pursue championship aspirations. Since the start of the 2023-24 season, Saudi Pro League has acquired some renowned players from across Europe, and most of them have joined both these clubs due to heavy investments made by them.
Due to the marquee signings, this fixture has become a game to keep an eye on and has now become a clash of ages. But the history of this match is what makes it more special.
The Historic Rivalry
The roots of these two Riyadh clubs trace back to the early days of organized football in Saudi Arabia’s Najd region during the 1950s. Al Nassr club was established in 1955 by brothers Zaid and Hussain Al Jab’a in Riyadh’s old center. The club’s name, meaning ‘Victory’ in Arabic, was chosen, and its now iconic yellow and blue colors symbolize the Arabian desert and surrounding seas.
A mere two years later, another powerhouse of Saudi football emerged in Riyadh. Al Hilal initially began as the ‘Olympic Club’ in 1957, undergoing a name change the following year to Al Hilal, meaning ‘The Crescent’.
While the inaugural nationwide Saudi league didn’t kick off until 1976, the rivalry between these two clubs had already begun. Their first showdown dates back to the 1963 King’s Cup, where they clashed in a memorable encounter that resulted in a 1-1 draw.
This early meeting set the stage for a rivalry steeped in history and significance, laying the groundwork for fierce battles and memorable clashes between Al Nassr and Al Hilal. Both the Riyadh based teams have played a total of 186 matches – 172 official matches and 14 unofficial matches.

Historic venue
The Riyadh derby has been played at a number of stadiums across Saudi Arabia and even abroad – the 2015 Saudi Super Cup between Al Hilal and Al Nassr was played at Loftus Road in London.
The recent derbies between the two teams have primarily taken place at Riyadh’s iconic King Fahd International Stadium, a venue constructed in 1987 in preparation for the FIFA World Youth Championships. With a seating capacity of up to 67,000 spectators, this stadium has become the primary location for their clashes.
Apart from the King Fahd Stadium, the derby has occasionally been hosted at the older Faisal bin Fahd Stadium, which serves as a secondary venue for home matches of both teams.
