Scotland trying to convince Anthony Gordon to change international allegiance

Anthony Gordon won the UEFA Euro U-21 with England in the summer

Following Gareth Southgate's most recent rejection, Scotland is attempting to convince Anthony Gordon to join the Tartan Army. Despite his stellar Premier League play, Southgate did not pick the Newcastle midfielder in his England squad for their forthcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

Gordon has played 34 times for England at the young levels, for the youngsters to the under-21s. He has not yet been called up for a senior team, but his grandparents provide him the chance to play outside the border.

The Daily Star claims that Gordon, Tino Livramento, Elliot Anderson, and Harvey Barnes were each informed of the Scots' desire to offer their assistance. Gordon is so close to making his way into Southgate's team that it seems odd he would give up the chance to play for his country, but weirder things have occurred in international sport.

John Carver, the former temporary boss of Newcastle United and current assistant coach for Scotland, would be thrilled to see Gordon don the navy blue jersey. He stated

If someone’s got a relation who is Scottish, then we have to look at it.

It’s then down to what he decides but we are aware that these are big decisions about their future. It’s no secret that Newcastle is my team and I watch them more than anybody.

"We are aware they have several outstanding players, who have never been capped by England at senior level, who qualify for Scotland.” England remains the most attractive proposition for young players in the British Isles due to their international standing.
