Australia announce squad for AFC Asian Cup 2023
The Socceroos are placed along with India in Group B of the AFC Asian Cup.
The Aussies have announced their squad for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, which will be played in Qatar. Australia are in the same group as India, and the two sides will face each another in their respective openers.
The 2015 champions will be among the favourites at the tournament, after reaching the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
Some of the stalwarts, who represented Australia in the FIFA World Cup, have been left out of the Asian Cup squad, as tactician Graham Arnold looks to blood a new generation of football superstars who can ultimately help the nation fulfil their dual objective of both continental as well as global success.
Graham Arnold speaks
“At our core we have an extremely connected group, who have built a strong culture over many years. We’re welcoming in some new players who I think will prove fantastic additions to that,” Arnold said about the squad.
“It’s important that we bring energy and intensity to both our preparation and play, it’s something we’ve become renowned for and will be a big part of the group’s success moving forward,” he added.
“We’ve had to be strategic with some of our selections, considering our Olympic qualification commences in April and have looked to balance the age profile and experience of players across various positions in the squad. I’m excited about the potential within this group and am looking forward to getting into camp in the New Year,” he added further.
