Jay Gupta is currently one of the standout footballers in the ISL 2023-24.
FC Goa’s 22-year-old sensation, Jay Gupta, has taken the Indian Super League (ISL) by storm in his debut season. The young defender, who has become an integral part of the unbeatable FC Goa squad, recently shared his insights in an interview with the ISL Media. His transition from Portugal’s elite development programs to becoming a formidable force in FC Goa’s defense has been nothing short of impressive.
Gupta’s journey began in 2019 when he ventured to Portugal, joining GDS Cascais’ youth system. His senior career saw him navigate through clubs like G.D. Estoril B and Ebre Escola Esportiva before landing in the ranks of FC Goa in August 2023.
Embracing change and finding his niche
Speaking about his move to Portugal, Jay Gupta reminisced, “It was a new tie-up that they had with this first division club in Portugal which had an elite development program. He thought that I would have the capacity to go there and nurture myself.”
His time in Portugal was transformative, not just in honing his skills but also in understanding the nuances of the game. “The culture is different,” Gupta shared. “They’re obsessed with it. That obsession is what makes the grassroots so good. They want their players from a young age to have the capability to reach the first team right away.”
Initially a winger, Gupta’s trajectory shifted under the guidance of a Spanish coach named Jose. “I started seeing that my physical capabilities complemented what the centre-back position needs. I started liking it so much,” Gupta explained.
Versatility and inspirations
Jay Gupta’s adaptability came to the fore when Manolo Marquez, FC Goa’s current head coach, explored his potential as a left-back. Reflecting on his role transition, the defender expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “Being able to play as a full-back, I am able to show a lot more and I’m able to help the team a lot more.”
He drew inspiration from players like Joao Cancelo, aiming to replicate their impact on the field. “Cancelo is one of the best full-backs I’ve ever seen. Looking at him helped me understand what a full-back does and how much he can contribute,” Gupta shared.
Memorable moments and aspirations
His standout goal against Odisha FC in the ISL was not a stroke of luck but a culmination of practiced precision. “I had been looking for this exact goal for a long period of time and I’ve worked it on my muscle memory for a very long time,” Gupta revealed.
Acknowledging coach Marquez’s influence, Gupta highlighted the demanding yet beneficial nature of his mentor’s guidance. “He started to train my mind in every training session,” Gupta emphasized.
Adjusting to the heightened professionalism in the ISL has been a challenge, but Jay Gupta relishes the intensity. “You always have to be on, and I love that,” he remarked.
National pride and future dreams
Expressing his eagerness to contribute to the Indian national team, Gupta affirmed, “It is our dream to be able to get to the World Cup. And to be able to help the national team would be the biggest honour that I could get.”
He reiterated, “It’s always been that Indian call-up that I’ve been dreaming about, more than playing for any European club. I’ve always only wanted to play for my country and eventually help them get to that dream,” he concluded.
