The clash between Mumbai City FC and Mohun Bagan in the ISL 2023-24 season unfolded as a riveting spectacle, etching itself into the annals of football history. The encounter showcased a gripping narrative as The Islanders triumphed over The Mariners in a nail-biting 2-1 showdown.

Jason Cummings initiated the scoring for Mohun Bagan, only to have his efforts countered by the relentless Mumbai City side. Greg Stewart’s equaliser set the stage for a pulsating finale, ultimately sealed by Bipin Singh’s decisive goal. However, the true protagonist of this football saga was the referee, orchestrating a drama of discipline. The match bore witness several red cards and yellow cards, underscoring the intensity, tenacity and mockery that defined this classic encounter in the ISL 2023-24 season.

Mumbai City FC (By Atawaris Warsi)

Phurba Lachenpa – 8

He wasn’t much troubled by Mohun Bagan attackers in the first half, but his save in the dying minutes to deny The Mariners the equaliser was equally commendable.

Rahul Bheke – 7

The captain led by example as he thwarted several attacks of The Mariners. His ball switching on either side were key in creating chances.

Mehtab Singh – 7

Partnered well along with Griffiths and Bheke to block the Mohun Bagan attackers. His aerial duels and tackling were quite impressive.

Rostyn Griffiths – 7.5

Overall Griffiths had quite an impressive outing apart from the stance of him defending the cross that resulted in the Mohun Bagan goal.

Akash Mishra – 1

Received the red card early on, which hurt the Islanders in the first half.

Greg Stewart – 8

Again an important player for The Islanders against Mohun Bagan. He scored the vital equaliser for Mumbai City FC. Also received the red card at the very end

Apuia – 8

A magnificent performance by the youngsters. He was all over the pitch, intercepting and defending throughout the game.

Yoell Van Nieff – 8

Took several shots from distance, while The Islanders were looking for the equaliser.

Bipin Singh – 9

Bipin scored the most vital goal for Mumbai City FC, which ensured the victory for the Islanders. His performance on the flanks was extraordinary.

Lallianzuala Chhangte – 5

Chhangte was sacrificed after the red card to Akash Mishra. He couldn’t contribute much.

Jorge Pereyra Diaz – 8

Didn’t get on the scoresheet but was instrumental in building up the play for The Islanders, especially after Akash’s red. He was also the one who helped Asish Rai receive a red.

Substitutes

Valpuia – 8.5

He was substituted in place of Lallianzuala Chhangte to help the Islanders cope with the absence of Akash Mishra, and boy, he definitely showed immense determination in defence.

Vikram Partap Singh – 7.5

He came in place of Valpuia after the first half and contributed effectively in attack as well as defence.

Tiri – 7

He was substituted to assist the team in defence and he definitely lived up to it.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant (by Uttiyo Sarkar)

Vishal Kaith – 4.5

Kaith had a night to forget in Mumbai. Couldn’t time his reflexes fast enough to save Stewart’s header, which hit his palm and went in. Then got bamboozled by Bipin’s deflected shot that looped in behind him into the back of the net.

Asish Rai – 4.0

Rai had a frustrating game, being tormented by Bipin Singh and failing to create anything. Then lost his head with an awful studs-up challenge that got him sent off in the second half.

Brendan Hamill – 6.5

Hamill was arguably the most error-free defender for his side. Held his own at the back, making two clearances and four possession recoveries and keeping Diaz quiet.

Hector Yuste – 5.5

Hector got totally outwitted by Diaz for the first goal, being horribly moved out of position. Made a few key clearances after that, but seemed shaky in the transitions.

Subashish Bose – 5.0

The Mohun Bagan SG captain played under pressure and often committed into some poor challenges. Booked for a reckless challenge before Liston’s strike and was outjumped by Stewart for his goal too.

Deepak Tangri – 5.0

Tangri was often too aggressive for his own good, making some silly fouls and coming close to getting sent off too. Couldn’t really stop  Mumbai’s flow through midfield or protect his backline.

Anirudh Thapa – 6.0

Thapa showed positive energy in pressing the Mumbai City players sharply, winning back the ball in key positions many times. But he was unable to create much and it was his deflection that caūsed the second goal.

Hugo Boumous – 6.0

Boumous was a bit of a frustrated figure against his ex-side. He moved the ball around nicely and created some nice stuff in the first half, but unable to get the ball in any promising areas.

Manvir Singh – 6.0

Manvir used his clever movement to dart past his man a few times on the right and swung in some decent crosses. Couldn’t come close to scoring and withered away in the second half.

Liston Colaco – 5.5

Colaco had a game of one-and-a-half halves. He was brilliant in the first half, making some great runs and even perfectly setting up the opener. But then lost his temper and got in the referee’s face, getting sent off.

Jason Cummings – 7.5

Cummings maintained his impressive uprise in form with a real predator’s finish for the opener. Dropped deep to help link-up some nice moves and was proactive all throughout his outing.

Substitutes

Dimitri Petratos – 6.0

Petratos couldn’t exactly make any major impact after coming on, seeing one shot blaze past the goal.

Kiyan Nassiri – 6.5

Nassiri was forced to play in a different role and almost cover the responsibilities of multiple players. Moved the ball forward nicely, and had a brilliant shot late on saved.

Armando Sadiku – 5.5

Sadiku couldn’t continue his impressive form and was unable to really bring any goal-scoring threat.

Sumit Rathi – N/R

Rathi added some more defensive sturdiness to his side towards the end.

Ravi Rana – N/R

Rana was quite proactive in his late cameo and mostly involved in defensive work. Boooked for a late foul.
