Igor Stimac announced a 50-member probables list for the AFC Asian Cup on December 12.

As the anticipation for the AFC Asian Cup in January next year builds, Indian football fans eagerly await the unveiling of the final squad that will represent the nation on the continental stage. The recently released list of 50 probables by head coach Igor Stimac has sparked discussions and debates among enthusiasts, with some notable non-inclusions raising eyebrows.

Here, we shed light on five deserving players who, based on their stellar performances in the ongoing season, should have secured a place in India‘s 50-member probables list.

Arshdeep Singh

FC Goa’s custodian, Arshdeep Singh, has been a revelation in the ongoing season, leading the race for the Golden Glove. The 26-year-old goalkeeper boasts an impressive record of six clean-sheets in just eight games, conceding a mere three goals. Arshdeep’s shot-stopping abilities and commanding presence between the posts make him a standout performer.

With a remarkable save percentage of 80, he has proven his mettle in high-pressure situations. It is perplexing that a goalkeeper of his caliber and form has been overlooked for the provisional squad, especially considering his performances in the current ISL season.

Sachin Suresh

Another goalkeeper who has been unjustly omitted from the list is the young and talented Sachin Suresh of Kerala Blasters. Known for his exceptional shot-stopping skills, the Kerala-born shot-stopper has made 23 saves in nine games this season.

In a display of resilience, Sachin has made two penalty saves out of four faced, showcasing his ability to thrive under pressure. The 50-man probables list seems incomplete without recognizing the promising talent and potential that Sachin Suresh brings to the table.

Jerry Lalrinzuala

Jerry Lalrinzuala has found his rhythm at Odisha FC under the guidance of coach Sergio Lobera. The Mizo youngster has evolved into a complete package, showcasing a deep understanding of the game and a clarity of his role. The left-back has been an undisputed starter for the Juggernauts, featuring in all 14 games in the ISL and the AFC Cup.

Jerry’s contributions extend beyond his defensive duties; he has scored a goal and created six chances for his side, emphasizing his versatility and impact on both ends of the pitch. His omission is a missed opportunity to add a dynamic and reliable presence to India’s defensive lineup.

Phalguni Singh

In the midfield, the absence of Phalguni Singh is conspicuous. The Manipuri midfielder has not only excelled in the destroyer role but has also showcased his abilities as a deep-lying playmaker. Bringing a physical presence to the midfield, the 28-year-old has scored a goal and created 12 chances for NorthEast United.

With a passing percentage close to 80, Phalguni’s ability to dictate the tempo of the game and break down opposition attacks should not be underestimated. His versatility and impact make him a strong contender for a spot in the squad.

Puitea

Lalthathanga Khawlhring, affectionately known as Puitea, has been the engine driving Sergio Lobera’s side. Operating in a pivotal role that allows other midfield maestros to flourish, Puitea’s work rate and intelligence on the pitch make him an indispensable asset. In 14 games this season, Puitea has averaged an impressive 38 passes per game in the ISL alone.

Additionally, he has contributed a goal and an assist, showcasing his ability to not only provide defensive stability but also contribute to attacking plays. Overlooking a player of Puitea’s caliber denies the squad a valuable player who has the work ethic and vision needed for success at the highest level.
