As the AFC Asian Cup 2023 is almost ready for the round of 16 fixtures, Iraq’s Aymen Hussein has set his name in the record books. Consequently, in a thrilling display of aerial prowess, Iraq’s Aymen Hussein etched his name into the records of football history during the AFC Asian Cup 2023. With a remarkable feat reminiscent of a past legend, Hussein became the first player since Younis Mahmoud in 2007 to score three headers in a single AFC Asian Cup edition.
Throughout the tournament, Aymen Hussein showcased his exceptional ability in the air, proving to be a formidable threat to opposing defenses. His commanding presence in the box and impeccable timing allowed him to capitalize on set-piece opportunities, delivering crucial goals for the Iraqi national team.
One of his headed goals came in the match against Vietnam where he helped his side to secure a win after Iraq went down early. The other two headers were in the historic match where they defeated the mighty Japan side. Aymen is also the current top-scorer of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 with five goals.

In 2007, Younis Mahmoud reached the pinnacle of his career by guiding his country to victory in the 2007 AFC Asian Cup. A standout moment during this tournament was Mahmoud’s exceptional performance in scoring three goals through headers, contributing to his total tally of four in that edition.
By achieving this milestone, Aymen Hussein joins the ranks of Younis Mahmoud, a well-regarded figure in Iraqi football history. Aymen and Younis are also the top scorers in the AFC Asian Cup for Iraq with eight and five goals, respectively.
By etching his name alongside legends like Younis Mahmoud, Hussein has left an indelible mark. Iraq have qualified for the round of 16 and will play the best third-placed team from Group B, E, or F on January 29.
