AFC Asian Cup 2023 Round of 16 Fixtures Revealed; Saudi Arabia face South Korea
The AFC Asian Cup 2023 knockout stages will commence on January 28.
The 2023 AFC Asian Cup has presented us with many exceptional moments so far. After a thrilling round of group stage fixtures, the focus now shifts to the all important knockout games at the continental championship.
The tournament has staged a top brand of football during the group stages and is expected to continue the momentum moving into the knockouts. It’s now going to be a ‘do-or-die’ situation for all the teams.
It’s now or never for all the teams because either they perform or go home. As of now nine teams have qualified for the R016 while seven places are still up for grabs. All the groups have wrapped up their fixtures other than Group E and Group F.
From Group A, hosts and defending champions Qatar and first-time AFC Asian Cup participants Tajikistan have booked a place in the RO16. Australia, Uzbekistan and Syria have qualified from Group B while Iran and the UAE have made it to the next stage from Group C.
Iraq shocked the world and won Group D ahead of title favourites Japan who qualified as the second best team in their group. No team has qualified from Group E and the qualification will depend on the final matchday. Saudi Arabia are the only side to have booked a spot in the RO16 from Group F.
On that note, let us take a look at the RO16 fixtures of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
Format
If two teams are tied for the same number of points, their ranking will be decided by
- Points in the two tied teams’ against one another encounter
- Goal disparity within the team
- Total goals scored during the group drawing.
- If both sides are unable to separate during the knockout stages, the match will proceed to 30 minutes of additional time and penalties. To decide who wins the bronze medal, the two losing semi finalists will compete in a third-place playoff.
