Australia vs India: Three key battles to watch out for in AFC Asian Cup tie
This AFC Asian Cup fixture is expected to be the toughest game for India in recent times.
One of the world’s most decorated and highly anticipated continental championships is just a sleep away from kicking off its 18th edition. The 2023 AFC Asian Cup will be held at the home of the defending champions Qatar.
After the opening day, India will face off against Australia in what will be Igor Stimac‘s toughest assignment till date. The Blue Tigers are placed in Group B alongside Australia, Uzbekistan and Syria.
While Australia travel to Qatar with the hope of securing a second AFC Asian Cup title, India will look to make a way to the knockouts. It is going to be an uphill task for Sunil Chhetri and co. On that note, let us take a look at the three key battles that could decide the outcome of the game.
3. Jordan Bos vs Lallianzuala Chhangte
A formidable figure in Australia’s backline, Jordan Bos has been one of the most crucial players for his team in recent times. He’s young, quick and full of energy and is ever ready to stop danger. Moreover, he always has an eye for goal and has decent numbers to show for his efforts.
Chhangte on the other hand has been India’s best player in the last twelve months or so. He can shift flanks as per the team’s requirement and can operate seamlessly on either side. But, standing in his way will be Jordan Bos who himself is very well known for his defensive attributes.
2. Mitchell Duke vs Gurpreet Singh Sandhu
Mitchell Duke will lead Australia’s frontline at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. The 32-year-old comes into the event as Australia’s leading goal-scorer with 12 goals to his name in 33 appearances. His experience coupled with his skill set will be Australia’s main weapon up front.
But, standing in his way will be India’s wall Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. Gurpreet has been India’s most reliable option under the sticks and will look to continue his heroics in Qatar as India prepare for a mighty challenge. Gurpreet has kept a record 25 clean sheets for the Indian football team till date.
1. Mathew Ryan vs Sunil Chhetri
Australia’s captain Mathew Ryan will make his record 82nd appearance when the side will face off against India on Saturday. Be it the FIFA World Cup or the AFC Asian Cup, Ryan has always led his side from the front. Known as a ‘sweeper keeper’ for his brilliant ball distribution and movements, Ryan will look to keep Sunil Chhetri at bay.
However, captain Chhetri will not be an easy opposition to deal with. He is very smart and can hurt his opponents in many ways. With 93 international goals for India, Chhetri is currently the third-highest active goal-scorer in international football.
It will be interesting to see who comes out on top in the battle of the skippers.
