The odds do not favour the Blue Tigers going far into the competition.
Indian football team begins its crucial AFC Asian Cup 2023 journey from 13th January onwards with a fixture against tournament favourites Australia in Group B. Igor Stimac’s men have a huge challenge facing them in the biggest continental competition for Asian national teams. Qatar will be the host country for the prestigious tournament where India hopes to cause a few upsets.
India plays Australia, predicted by Opta to have a 10.7% chance of winning the Asian Cup tournament opener, following which they have matches against Uzbekistan and Syria respectively. The Blue Tigers are the lowest-ranked team in Group B and have the worst odds of making it into the playoffs out of the four teams.

Here is a look at the predictions for Group B teams, analyzing how far the teams can go in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup:
Group Predictions
Australia and Uzbekistan have a 56.4% and 22.6% chance of securing first place in Group B respectively. As for Syria and India, they have a 12.3% and 8.7% chance of winning the group respectively.
In terms of second place which also ensures qualification into the knockouts, Uzbekistan has the best odds with a 33% chance of securing the spot. Australia has 25.7%, Syria has 23.4% and India has an 18% chance of finishing as group runner-ups.
The battle for third and fourth place will likely be between Syria and India. In Opta Analyst’s simulations, Syria finished third and fourth on 32% and 32.3% of the time respectively. Lastly, India has a 29.4% chance to secure the third spot and a 43.9% chance to finish fourth. The Blue Tigers would look to advance into the knockouts as one of the best third-placed teams if they are unable to finish among the first two places.
Knockout Predictions
Australia has a 92.4% chance of reaching the Round of 16, 62% chance of reaching the quarter-finals, 37.7% chance of reaching the semi-final and 20.4% chance of becoming finalists with a 10.7% chance of winning the AFC Asian Cup.
Uzbekistan holds a 74.1% chance of reaching the Round of 16, 39.3% chance of reaching the quarter-finals, 18.7% chance of making it into the semi-finals, 7.8% chance of reaching the finals and a 2.5% chance of winning the tournament.
Syria is predicted to have a 57.1%, 24.4%, 9.6%, 3.2% and 1% chance of reaching the Round of 16, quarters, semis, the final and winning the Asian Cup respectively.
Notably, India has a 45.3% chance of reaching the Round of 16. Moreover, they hold a 16.8% chance of making it into the quarter-finals, a 5.4% chance of reaching the semis, a 1.6% chance of reaching the final fixture and a meagre 0.4% chance of winning the AFC Asian Cup 2023.
