AFC Asian Cup 2023: Iraq vs Vietnam: Predicted lineup, injury news, head-to-head, telecast
The Lions of Mesopotamia will aim to finish the AFC Asian Cup group stage with a perfect record.
Iraq caused a massive upset in the ongoing 2023 AFC Asian Cup by defeating Japan thanks to a 2-1 scoreline, confirming their qualification into the knockout stages from Group D. They are up against Vietnam in the final group fixture which is set to take place on 24 January 2024 at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
As for Vietnam, their journey in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup will likely be over after their group fixture against Iraq. The side is out of contention for one of the top two spots in the group which ensures an automatic place in the playoffs because of defeats against Japan and Indonesia. If they manage to win the game against Iraq, there is an outside chance that they go through as one of the best third-placed teams but the odds do not favour that outcome.
As the excitement builds ahead of the game where Iraq will aim to win their third Group D fixture, here is what to look out for:
Kick-off
Wednesday, 24 January 2024, 5:00 PM IST (11:30 GMT) at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
Form
Iraq (all competitions): W-W-L-W-W
Vietnam (all competitions): W-L-L-L-L
Player to Watch
Ahmed Al-Hajjaj (Iraq)
Ahmed Al-Hajjaj impressed the Iraq football team fans and the neutrals alike with his sensational performance against Japan. The full-back showed incredible energy and hunger against the Samurai Blue which saw him make several darting runs down the left flank and provide an assist from one of them for Aymen Hussein.
Filip Nguyen (Vietnam)
If Vietnam have any hopes of coming away from the upcoming fixture with a positive result, then Filip Nguyen must deliver a good performance. The custodian was decent against Indonesia where he made four saves and two impressive high claims. Iraq attack with intent and pace, which caused plenty of problems for Japan. To stop the Lions of Mesopotamia from scoring, Nguyen must step up once again.
