The football community is reeling from the sudden and tragic loss of Sandeep Chattoo, the visionary owner of Real Kashmir Football Club (RKFC), who passed away at the age of 57 due to a severe heart attack. As the news spread, heartfelt tributes poured in from individuals deeply connected to the man who played a pivotal role in reinvigorating football in the Kashmir valley.
Former Real Kashmir boss David Robertson, who shared a profound friendship with Sandeep, expressed his shock and devastation on LinkedIn, stating, “I’m devastated to hear of the passing of my great friend Sandeep Chattoo, to say I’m in shock is an understatement. Everyone knows what amazing and incredible things he did for football and the people of Kashmir, but also as a person, a gentleman and a friend he was the best.”
Robertson’s heartfelt tribute continued, emphasising Sandeep’s multifaceted impact. He wrote, “I have shared so many magical moments with Sandeep that will always be with me. He warmed the hearts of my family and looked after them when they visited Kashmir. Our sincere condolences to Poonam, Samarth, Prapti and family. A great man taken from us far too soon. Sandeep, you’re one of a kind. I will miss you greatly. RIP Sandeep.”
Beyond the personal sentiments, Robertson acknowledged Sandeep’s significant contributions to football and the people of Kashmir. As a hotelier, Sandeep recognized the potential of football to redirect the energies of the region’s youth, leading to the establishment of Real Kashmir in 2016. The club, affectionately known as the ‘Snow Leopards,’ achieved remarkable success under Sandeep’s leadership, winning the second division I-League in 2018 and the prestigious IFA Shield in December 2020.
The untimely demise of Sandeep Chattoo leaves a void in the football community, and David Robertson’s heartfelt words serve as a poignant tribute to a man who left an indelible mark on the sport and the lives he touched. As RKFC continue their journey in the 2023-24 I-League season, Sandeep’s legacy will endure through the success of the club he passionately nurtured.
