We are into SF of Super Cup, which is a positive feeling, asserts East Bengal coach Carles Cuadrat

East Bengal won the first Kolkata Derby of the season
East Bengal emerged victorious over their arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the inaugural Kolkata Derby of the year, securing a 3-1 win in the Kalinga Super Cup 2024 at the Kalinga Stadium on January 19th.
Mohun Bagan secured an early lead in the match with a goal by Hector Yuste in the 19th minute, yet East Bengal promptly equalized in the 24th minute with a goal by Cleiton Silva.
During the latter part of the game, Nandhakumar scored, while Cleiton secured his second goal and the team’s third in the 80th minute, ultimately clinching victory. With this triumph, East Bengal have secured a spot in the semi-finals of the Kalinga Super Cup.
The post-match press conference for East Bengal was attended by head coach Carles Cuadrat who expressed his delight at the team’s victory.
Performance of the players
East Bengal played exceptionally well in the match, demonstrating their best efforts both in attack and in defence.
“I’m very happy for the players and the club as well. Everyone was very competitive today. Now, we are into the semi-final of the Super Cup, which is surely a positive feeling. The team is performing in bigger stages, it’s the most important aspect for the club,” Cuadrat said while appreciating his players.
Winning the derby
Irrespective of any other match in the Super Cup, East Bengal’s win against Mohun Bagan scripts a different history which they will rejoice for a long time.
“Every derby is different and winning today’s match was very important. Although we have heard about the statements that the opponent is thrashing us, but things happened the way we thought off,” Carles Cuadrat noted while answering a question regarding the win in the derby.
Missed chances in the game
Although East Bengal emerged victorious in the match, the scoreline could have been significantly altered had they capitalized on their other opportunities during the game.
Commenting on this the Spaniard said, “Mohun Bagan is a great team, they can create problems if we miss chances. Yes, some chances were missed, but overall it was a good performance by the players today.”
Good with the defence
East Bengal’s prowess in defence was on display in the game, especially in the second half where they denied Mohun Bagan a single chance to capitalize on.
“You have to be strong in defence. Not just the central defenders, also the midfielders did their job well. I think now I can say, we are going in the right direction after seeing the performance,” Carles Cuadrat added.
A word for the fans
The fervent enthusiasm of the supporters for their team was evident as they turned out in large numbers to show their unwavering support. When asked about this Cuadrat replied, “I really appreciate their effort. It’s not easy to come so long to support the club.”
