I-League’s current top scorer Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia has not been called into the squad.

The stage is set for the 18th edition of the AFC Asian Cup, kicking off in Qatar on January 12th, 2024. Among the 24 participating nations, the Blue Tigers of India will be making their fifth appearance at the prestigious continental tournament.

As excitement builds, the tactical choices of head coach Igor Stimac, particularly in the attacking department, have come under scrutiny. This article delves into an analysis of the forwards selected for the Indian squad, dissecting their strengths, weaknesses and potential roles in Stimac’s gameplan.

Sunil Chhetri

While Sunil Chhetri’s form in the ongoing Indian Super League season might not be at its peak, his influence on the national team transcends mere statistics. With eight goals in 2023 for the Blue Tigers, he remains the team’s top scorer and a talismanic figure.

His experience, leadership qualities and composure under pressure are invaluable assets. Chhetri’s knack for converting half-chances and his unwavering dedication on the pitch make him an indispensable asset, especially in high-pressure situations.

Lallianzuala Chhangte

At 26, Lallianzuala Chhangte is entering his prime. Fresh off winning the AIFF Men’s Player of the Year and FPAI Indian Player of the Year awards, Chhangte has been a consistent performer for Mumbai City.

His pace, dribbling skills and ability to find teammates in dangerous positions make him a potent attacking threat. While his goalscoring numbers in the Indian Super League this season with two goals and as many assists in 11 appearances may not be eye-catching, Chhangte’s overall contribution to the team’s attacking play has been undeniable.

Vikram Partap Singh

Vikram Partap Singh embodies the burgeoning talent pool in Indian football. At 21, he has already gained valuable experience in the AFC Champions League and the Indian Super League. His hunger, energy and directness make him a constant menace on the counter-attack.

Singh’s finishing, though still under development, showed promise with a goal in the ISL this season. His ability to hold the ball up and link with midfielders adds another dimension to his game. While his playing time might be limited initially, Stimac sees him as a long-term investment and a potential breakout star in the tournament.

Rahul KP

Rahul KP’s inclusion in the squad has raised eyebrows considering his underwhelming form this season. However, Stimac clearly recognizes his potential, evidenced by his goal for India against China at the 2022 Asian Games.

Rahul’s technical prowess, vision and ability to unlock defences with a single pass and skills are undeniable. If he can rediscover his confidence and sharpness, he could be a game-changer for India. His versatility to play as a winger or a supporting striker adds further depth to the attacking options.

Ishan Pandita

Ishan Pandita’s inclusion, albeit in a limited role, reflects Stimac’s faith in his potential. Despite struggling for playing time at Kerala Blasters, his natural finishing ability and movement in the box cannot be ignored. Pandita’s hunger to prove himself could see him emerge as a valuable impact substitute, capable of snatching late goals or creating decisive moments.

The Notable Absentees

While the chosen forwards offer a diverse skill-set, the exclusion of certain players has sparked debate. Sivasakthi Narayanan, despite a less impactful season compared to the last, possesses the ability to link-up play and contribute goals when needed. Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia, the I-League’s current top scorer with nine goals in 11 appearances, has arguably been the most unfortunate omission. His clinical finishing and predatory instincts could have provided a valuable alternative in the final third.

The chosen forwards offer a diverse range of skills and experience. Chhetri’s leadership and experience, Chhangte’s pace and creativity, Vikram’s youthful energy and Rahul’s potential for impactful moments make for a well-rounded attack.

Ultimately, the success of the Blue Tigers at the AFC Asian Cup will depend on how effectively the players can combine their individual strengths and contribute to the team’s overall tactical vision. The tournament promises to be an exciting test for Indian football and the performance of its forwards will be crucial in determining the team’s fate.
