Report: Assam's Nehru Stadium to be upgraded to FIFA standard football-specific ground

The renovation of the Nehru Stadium has received a grant of Rs. 831 crore to support its development.
The Nehru Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, which was constructed in 1962, is poised to undergo renovation, as per India TV. The stadium, whose foundation stone for development was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be transformed into a FIFA standard football-specific ground.
Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma himself took to his Twitter account to share the news, where he stated, “We will upgrade Nehru Stadium to a #FIFA standard football-specific ground, with main and trial fields. Once completed, this will be the biggest sports complex in the entire eastern India.”
History of the Stadium
The Nehru Stadium, named after India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, has served as the venue for both cricket and football matches over the years. Notably, the stadium has hosted 13 One Day International (ODI) matches. In addition to it, the ground has also witnessed matches of the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Deodhar Trophy, as well as football matches for the Santosh Trophy and the Federation Cup.
Cost of the project
The extensive renovation project, which has been underway for several months, has received a grant of Rs. 831 crore to support its development. This announcement was made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Assam. Furthermore, a grant of Rs. 300 crore has been committed for the construction of a new sports complex in Chandrapur, in addition to the stadium.
Major developments of the stadium
With an enhanced capacity of 30,000 spectators, the venue will feature indoor training facilities, encompassing a badminton court, a swimming pool, a squash court and a shooting range. The outdoor facilities will include a football practice ground, a basketball court, a tennis court and the main football ground.
Additionally, the venue will be equipped with competition facilities, media and broadcasting facilities, spectator facilities, VIP facilities, and technical accommodations for 180 individuals.
