The latest FIFA Rankings have witnessed Qatar climb up the ladder with ease.
India had the worst possible start to 2024 as they put up an embarrassing performance on the continental stage and failed to win any of their three group stage fixtures. The Blue Tigers were one of the most underperforming teams at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
They not just failed to win a single game, but also failed to salvage a single goal at the championship. Fans and football pundits from all across the nation were left in disbelief as this was very contrary to the way India performed in 2023.
India drop down 15 places in latest FIFA Rankings
As per the latest FIFA rankings released on 15 February, 2024, India have dropped down to 117. The Blue Tigers have lost 15 places and have dropped from 102 to 117 following their disastrous performance at the Asian Cup. This is India’s worst-ever FIFA ranking since 2017 which raises serious concerns about the team’s future under Igor Stimac.
Moreover, Stimac’s side has dropped four positions in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) rankings and have fallen to 22 from 18. While Qatar are the Asian side who have climbed the most number of positions (21) after the Asian Cup, India are the side that has lost the most number of positions (15) following the continental showpiece.
India have lost 35.63 points in the latest rankings and their total points tally currently stand at 1165.17. After a defeat in their curtain-raiser against Australia, India dropped down to 106 from 102 before slipping down to 112 after the defeat against Uzbekistan and finally dropped down to 117 after the match against Syria.
India’s performance at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup
The Blue Tigers started their journey with a 2-0 defeat against the 2015 Asian champions Australia followed by a 3-0 demolition by Uzbekistan. And then were handed their third defeat of the campaign by Syria in their last group stage match.
