Odisha FC are set to face Central Coast Mariners in the inter-zonal semi-final of the 2023-24 AFC Cup. The first leg is scheduled to be held on March 7, 2024 at the Central Coast Stadium in Australia.
While Odisha FC secured the top position in their group stage fixtures last year, enabling them to progress to the semi-finals, the Central Coast Mariners achieved a notable victory by defeating Macarthur FC with a score of 3-2, which granted them the title of ASEAN Zone champions and secured their qualification for the subsequent round.
The pre-match press conference was graced by Odisha FC’s assistant coach, Floyd Pinto, and forward Roy Krishna. Excerpts are below:
A season to remember
Odisha FC have been in exceptional form this season. They emerged victorious in some unexpected circumstances and against some stronger teams.
Coach Floyd Pinto also mentioned about their dream run this season and said, “Yes, it has been quite a journey for us. This season has been kind of a breakthrough season for us and now we are going to represent India in Asia. Nobody expected that we would qualify for this round, but we did and now we are going to face one of the top teams in Australia.”
Managing the fatigue
It is evident that participating in a league at home and subsequently traveling for another tournament poses a significant challenge for both the players and the management. When asked about managing the fatigue, Pinto replied, “I think that’s part and parcel of the game. It’s also going to be the same for the other team when they travel to India. We are just enjoying the process and the responsibility of representing India.”
Sergio is the man
Although Sergio Lobera did not attend the press conference, it was confirmed that he will be present at the match. The assistant coach spoke highly of the Spaniard.
“Sergio is the reason why we are here at this moment. He has set a high standard for us in India and also in Asia. It’s also a pleasure working under him. He will himself be present tomorrow in the match,” Pinto stated.
Growth of Indian Super League
In recent times, the Indian Super League has ascended to become a premier league in the continent, showcasing burgeoning talents and attracting foreign players who demonstrate a keen interest in participating in the league.
Odisha FC forward Roy Krishna, spoke about the progression of football in India and the increasing level of the Indian Super League over time.
He said, “Being in India, it’s easy to watch most of the A-League matches as it starts at around 2 PM. At the moment, Central Coast Mariners and Wellington Phoenix are flying high in the league.
“When it comes to ISL, it has grown with time, especially because of the presence of foreign players and the emerging young talents. The league is getting tougher day by day. And in terms of growth, ISL is growing faster than A-League.”
