AFC U-20 Asian Cup 2027: Complete list of qualified nations
India has qualified for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup after 20 years.
After an enthralling qualifying campaign where nations bit their nails and sweated their nerves off on and off the pitch until the dying moments of the final game, the race for qualification to the main tournament went right down to the wire. However, after all the drama that has unfolded, the final sixteen teams are now set for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup in China in 2027.
Thirty-two teams went head-to-head in the qualification phase, out of which eight group winners, seven best second-placed teams, alongside hosts China, will be competing in the prestigious tournament, which is tentatively scheduled to take place between March 24 and April 10, 2027.
Six of the eight worst bottom-placed teams have been relegated to the development phase, while six teams from the development phase have been promoted to the qualification phase for the next qualification cycle.
Among the teams that qualified and missed out, the biggest surprise was the Australian U-20 side, who have failed to make it to the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup despite being the defending champions after winning the competition in 2025. Qatar, another Asian giant, were also knocked out in the group stage, while the Indian national team have qualified for the tournament after 20 years.
Among the sixteen nations that played in the last edition, five teams have failed to qualify: Australia, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Qatar and Yemen have been eliminated, making way for five new teams.
Let’s take a look at all sixteen nations that have qualified for the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup and the six nations that have been relegated to and promoted from the development phase.
Group A:
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
In Group A of the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers, hosts Kyrgyzstan were eliminated from the group stage after finishing third due to the late winner they conceded against Lebanon, despite getting a point against South Korea. The Philippines, who pulled out of the qualifiers, are directly relegated to the development phase, while South Korea and Lebanon have booked their tickets to the final tournament.
Lebanon last featured in the tournament in 2008, and this qualification is a special achievement for them as their U-20 side returns to the Asian stage after 18 years.

Relegated to development phase: Philippines
Group B:
Our own Blue Colts, led by Mahesh Gawli, made history in Group B as they qualified for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup for the first time in almost 20 years. They defeated Syria and Bangladesh to secure six points and finish in second place, qualifying as the sixth-best second-placed team.
Hosts Uzbekistan won three out of three to top the group, while Syria’s loss against India hampered their hopes massively. Bangladesh had a disastrous campaign and have been relegated to the development phase after ending the qualifiers with zero points.

Group C:
North Korea, who were eliminated in the group stages of the 2025 AFC U-20 Asian Cup, had a strong qualifying campaign as they won all three games, including a dramatic 2-1 win against Iran, scoring twice in stoppage time to secure all three points.
Iran were the other team from the group to make it to the main tournament in China, while hosts Vietnam were eliminated and relegated to the development phase with no points after also losing to Palestine, who finished third behind Iran.

Group D:
In Group D, hosts Bahrain were stunned as they ended up finishing at the bottom of the table despite winning against Tajikistan in the opening game. Defeats to Jordan and Afghanistan in the last game, which was a major upset, meant they had to finish last but ended up escaping relegation to the development phase.
Jordan and Tajikistan both qualified with six points each, while Afghanistan, who were expected to be relegated, finished third and stayed in the qualification phase for the next cycle.

Group E:
Qatar, the hosts of the group and the two-time defending champions of the senior Asian Cup, have failed to make it past the qualifying campaign as they suffered losses to Oman and Saudi Arabia in the first and third games respectively, both of whom have sealed their spots in the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup.
Saudi Arabia topped the group with nine points, while Oman edged Qatar to finish second by one point. Hong Kong, however, finished with one point and have been unfortunately relegated to the development phase for the next qualification cycle.

Group F:
Iraq, the favorites of the group, were stunned in the opening game week by Turkmenistan, who won 2-1 against all odds, but still ended up qualifying for the main tournament after registering wins against Thailand and UAE.
Things, however, worsened for Turkmenistan, as they ended up losing both their upcoming games and finished bottom of the group but escaped relegation.
Thailand finished second and secured their spot as the runners-up of the group after failing to defeat Iraq in the final week and missing the opportunity to finish top. UAE, the champions of the 2008 edition, have now failed to qualify for the tournament for three consecutive editions.

Group G:
Japan ended up finishing not just as the toppers of Group G, but also as the best team in the qualifying campaign, having scored the most goals (16) and conceding none, making them joint-best defensively alongside Uzbekistan.
The remaining three teams, Kuwait, Yemen and Cambodia, finished on three points each, with the latter ending up the furthest down and getting relegated to the development phase despite being the hosts.
Yemen, who featured in the last edition, failed to qualify this time around alongside Kuwait, with just one team making it out of the qualifiers.

Group H:
The biggest surprise of the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifying campaign happened in Group H, where defending champions Australia were eliminated from even the group stages after finishing third. The final match week saw Indonesia and Australia go head-to-head in a do-or-die clash, with Indonesia stunning the Socceroos to finish at the top.
Malaysia also qualified unbeaten, edging past Laos while earning back-to-back draws in the first two games against Indonesia and Australia. Hosts Laos finished with zero points and ended up as the sixth-worst bottom-placed team, hence getting relegated to the development phase.

2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup Development Phase:
Out of the twelve teams that were divided into three groups and competed in the development phase of the qualifiers, the top two nations from each group have earned qualification to the qualifying stage of the next qualification cycle.
These six teams will be part of the 32 nations competing in the next edition’s qualifiers, while the six teams relegated from the qualifying stage will replace them in this phase.
