The new President also asserted on the reformation of the AIFF.
Newly elected AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey placed immediate focus on expanding women’s football in India. Before being elected, he had promised reforms, transparency and accountability in the functioning of the AIFF. Indian football must learn from past mistakes. Chaubey outlined his initial plans to the members of the press during an interaction in Kolkata. Here are the key takeaways:
Minimum salary cap for IWL Players
Chaubey hinted at maintaining complete gender equality in Indian football. He plans to bring in a minimum salary cap for Indian Women’s League players, with efforts directed at restoring a balance.
The immediate focus is to promote the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup and conduct it without a hitch. Ultimately, Chaubey wants to ensure that women’s football is in better shape in the future than it is today.
U-17 Women’s League in association with SAI
The AIFF will be introducing an under-17 women’s league in India, in association with the Sports Authority of India. Chaubey believes in strengthening ties from the grassroots level and the introduction of such a league will be an excellent platform for players to showcase their mettle from a young age. Talent can be identified early and groomed.
Revival of traditional tournaments
The AIFF President confirmed plans to revive the historic Federation Cup. Junior-level tournaments, the U-21 Championship, and the Santosh Trophy will also be brought back at a major level.
Chaubey stressed that increased grassroots participation is key to finding more talent in the country. Tournaments like the Santosh Trophy will continue to be nurtured.
Aim to take the game through schools
Chaubey’s main aim is to take football through the schools. He said, “In India, there are 16 lakh government schools with 25 crore students. Most of these schools have a football ground each. If we can tap that area, and attach our licensed coaches with the physical trainers at the school, then a lot can be done without wasting energy and resources.”
This model can help Indian football in the long run and also utilize key resources in the right way. More children will end up playing football, which is crucial for the sustenance of the sport.
Technical Committee meeting soon to resolve issues
Kalyan Chaubey announced that the AIFF technical committee will be summoned to finalize issues such as coaching, scouting, and selection of players. Maintaining a balance between the interests of the National team and clubs is a priority focus in the long run. The technical committee will decide on the next manager and if Igor Stimac’s contract should be extended.
