Onana was battling for the ball with USMNT sensation Christian Pulisic when they collided. He instantly collapsed to the ground, gripping his right knee as the Belgian staff arrived on the pitch to aid.
Onana stood up on his own. He made his way to the bench, hobbling, to see whether he could continue. Finally, Belgium made a substitute, replacing Onana with Hans Vanaken in the 21st minute.
Despite his early absence from the game, Belgium were able to hold onto their lead. They demolished the co-host nation 4-1. It set up their match against Spain in the quarter-final of the World Cup 2026.
