Ange Postecoglou reveals why he decided to manage Al Nassr
Postecoglou has previously managed Tottenham and Nottingham Forest.
Ange Postecoglou claims that the opportunity to coach Cristiano Ronaldo and be a small part of another of football’s greats drew him to Saudi club Al Nassr.
In July, Postecoglou, 61, was appointed as the new coach of Al Nassr. He signed a two-year contract with the club, which includes Sadio Mané, Kingsley Coman, João Félix, and Ronaldo. This comes after the departure of Jorge Jesus, who is now the manager of Portugal.

Speaking on the LiSTNR podcast The Howie Games, the former Australia, Tottenham Hotspur, and Nottingham Forest manager noted that the opportunity to work with the quality amassed by the PIF-owned club, underlined by Ronaldo’s chase of 1000 career goals, was a major factor in attracting him to Riyadh.
“When I reflect on my career, what stands out for me is that I’ve been unbelievably blessed in being part of other people’s journeys,” Postecoglou said. “When I was a player, Ferenc Puskás was my coach, one of the greatest players of all time. And just that association has been unbelievable for me because I’m a small part of that man’s story; a little small part, but a small part.”
“So, there’s no doubt, Cristiano Ronaldo’s here, you kind of go, I can become a small part of his story as well. And not from a selfish point of view, but for my own kind of life’s journey, of everything I wanted to do since I was a kid, you get associated with these people on the way.”
Postecoglou has guided Al Nassr to an undefeated start to the 2026-27 season, earning the Saudi Pro League’s manager of the month award for August. The team looks to retain their Saudi title while also chasing their first Asian Champions League Elite title.
Why did Ange Postecoglou decide to become Al-Nassr manager?
It was mainly for the chance to coach Cristiano Ronaldo at the club.
Where do Al-Nassr stand in the table?
