Argentina become back-to-back FIFA World Cup finalists after beating England

In the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinals, Argentina stunned England with yet another late comeback. They have advanced to the final, where they will play against Spain on Sunday, July 19 (BST).
England had taken the lead thanks to a goal from Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute. But La Albiceleste responded through Enzo Fernández in the 85th minute. Lautaro Martínez’s goal in the second minute of injury time sent the Argentina supporters into a frenzy.
They once again managed to push another historic World Cup comeback. Lionel Messi set up both of Argentina’s goals, moving him into the lead of the Golden Boot standings with one more assist than Kylian Mbappé. Both players have scored eight goals in the tournament thus far.
La Albiceleste now have the opportunity to become the first back-to-back winners since Brazil in 1962. Meanwhile, England lost out on their possible first FIFA World Cup final spot in sixty years.
Argentina set a new FIFA World Cup record

After beating England, Argentina became the sixth reigning World Cup champion to reach the second FIFA World Cup final in a row.
Only three countries have advanced to consecutive Men’s World Cup finals apart from the South American giants; they are Italy, Brazil (twice) and France.
Only Italy (1938) and Brazil (1962) successfully defended their crowns and won consecutive titles. Meanwhile, Argentina will be hoping to be the third country to defend the title and win it for the second time in a row.
Having won the title in 2022 against France, La Albiceleste will face Spain in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
