Argentina will face England in the semifinal on July 15.

Argentina defeated a gritty Swiss side 3-1 after a grueling clash of 120 minutes to secure a berth in the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup for the second consecutive edition. In the semifinals, they will face England, who outlasted the test of Norway with the scoreline of 2-1 in Miami heat.

La Albiceleste cruised in the group stage with three comfortable wins over Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. However, their knockout games have been far from easy. They played 120 minutes and were tested to the limit by World Cup debutants Cape Verde before they secured a remarkable comeback win over Egypt.

Their win over Egypt will be eminently memorable for both famous and infamous reasons. Nevertheless, against Switzerland, the game was again forced into extra time.

The defending champions have scored 17 goals in the ongoing campaign, the most by any player, out of which 10 are either scored or assisted by Lionel Messi. However, their clash with Thomas Tuchel’s England is expected to test them once more and decide their fate in the tournament.

Lionel Messi: Argentina captain Lionel Messi is expected to be fit for the semifinal clash. Messi took a blow from Granit Xhaka in his right eye in the quarter-final game against Switzerland. The former Barcelona attacker came off the bench in La Albiceleste’s last group-stage match against Jordan; otherwise, he has started all games for the side.

Cristian Romero: Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero was subbed off in the extra time due to exhaustion and is set to return again against England in the defending champions’ crucial clash.

However, fielding a fully recovered XI against the Three Lions would be a tough challenge for Lionel Scaloni, as two of Argentina’s last three games have gone into extra time against sides that prefer to play physical football.
