1. 1966: Argentina 0-1 England

This clash took place at the very renowned Wembley Stadium in London. Juan Carlos Lorenzo was the head coach for the Argentina national football team. They looked weak in the final third, but were able to hold England.

The Three Lions came up with a match-winning goal in the 78th minute. Later, the Englishmen went on to win the FIFA World Cup during the same campaign for their first and only time.

2. 1986: Argentina 2-1 England

La Albiceleste controversially won the fixture. This contest is famous for the “Hand of God” goal scored by Diego Maradona early in the second half. In the 55th minute, the Argentine legend went on to complete his brace.

The Three Lions were only able to score one goal, which was not enough. The Argentina national football team went on to win the FIFA World Cup for the second time in 1986.

3. 1990: Argentina 0-0 Yugoslavia (3-2 on penalties)

Carlos Bilardo was the head coach for Argentina that year. They battled hard against Yugoslavia. Nothing separated these sides at extra time.

The contest was then moved to a penalty shootout. La Albiceleste scored three of them and went on to secure a spot in the semifinals. Captain Diego Maradona failed to convert from the spot.

4. 1998: Argentina 1-2 Netherlands

Captained by Diego Simeone, the Argentina national football team were having an undefeated FIFA World Cup campaign until they reached the quarterfinals. They conceded an early goal against the Netherlands. Claudio Javier López levelled the scoreline for La Albiceleste in the 17th minute.

The Germans scored all four of their penalties, but the Argentine squad were only able to find the net twice. This loss led to their elimination from the mega competition in 2006.

6. 2010: Argentina 0-4 Germany

It is one of the games that the Argentina national football team want to forget about. From start to end, the Germans controlled the game. They took an early lead in the game.

This piled up a lot of pressure on La Albiceleste. Germany then went on to score three more goals in the second half. They ran riot against the Argentine squad.

Names like Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuaín and Angel Di Maria failed to provide for the team. This loss once again led to their elimination from the world stage.

The 2014 campaign of the FIFA World Cup was one of the best for the Argentina national football team. They reached the final of the mega competition, but failed to secure the World Cup crown.

8. 2022: Netherlands 2-2 Argentina (3-4 on penalties)

In that specific fixture more than 15 cards were shown to players and as well as the staff members of both sides. Nahuel Molina broke the deadlock and gave Argentina a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. It was Lionel Messi who converted from the spot in the 73rd minute to make it 2-0 for his nation.

Things were looking quite positive until Wout Weghorst came up to score a brace late in the second half. The scoreline was 2-2 at extra time. La Albiceleste converted four spot kicks.

The Dutch were only able to do it three times during the penalty shootout. Messi and company went on to win the flagship trophy in 2022.
