La Albiceleste to face Egypt in the last 16!

The Argentina national football team battled it out against the Cape Verde national football team in their round of 32 contest at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Miami Stadium in the USA witnessed this thrilling clash.

Lionel Messi and company have finally succeeded in securing a spot in the round of 16. This became a very tough outing for them against the debutants, Cape Verde. They took the lead first, but time and time again, Bubista’s men fought back to keep their dream alive.

The Blue Sharks came up with an equaliser in extra time as well, but the Argentine side took the lead again. It was a brilliant performance by the Cape Verde national football team, who will now return home with their heads high.

Important things we learned from this match:

1. Cape Verde’s Cinderella run comes to an end

Despite all their efforts against the three-time world champions, the Cabo Verde national football team have bowed out of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Till the final moments of the contest, the Blue Sharks did not give up and this is a campaign to remember for the nation. They pushed Lionel Messi and the team to the limits, but it was not quite enough.

2. Argentina through after crisis

The defending champions looked vulnerable on multiple occasions against the Blue Sharks. They scored goals to keep the lead, but from the other end, Cabo Verde did not back down and kept the fight alive. With their resilience in extra time, the Argentina national football team took the lead and went on to secure a spot in the last 16.

3. Lionel Messi keeps going

The 39-year-old is once again leading the Golden Boot race with seven goals to his name in the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the moment. Lionel Messi scored the opening goal for the Argentina national football team against Cape Verde. He came up with multiple chances, but Vozinha was once again phenomenal between the sticks.

4. Argentina’s defence raises concerns

The Lionel Scaloni-led side conceded two goals at the hands of the Cabo Verde national football team and were pushed to the limit. They only conceded one goal during the group stage, but their defence in the round of 32 clash was quite poor. The Argentine side will be looking to work on it, or they are going to face a lot of trouble going forward.

5. Cabo Verde’s fight not enough

Vozinha, Sidny Lopes Cabral, Deroy Duarte and also captain Ryan Mendes were some top performers against Lionel Messi and company. They worked hard, pushed the three-time world champions to the limit and were very close to pulling off a mega upset. Bubista’s men fought well till the end, but it was not quite enough and they will now head back home with their heads high.

6. Argentina to battle the Pharaohs in the last 16

Led by Lionel Scaloni, the Argentina national football team are now bound for the round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup 2026. They are going to take on Mohamed Salah’s Egypt. After Cabo Verde pushed La Albiceleste to the limits, the Argentine side will now be extra careful for their next contest and must not repeat the mistakes against the Pharaohs.
