Argentina vs Switzerland - All-time head-to-head record ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

Argentina hold an unbeaten record against Switzerland as they face them in the FIFA World Cup 2026 QFs.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 has reached its decisive stages, with only eight teams left in contention for football’s biggest prize. Defending champions Argentina kept their title defence alive by edging past Egypt in a thrilling 3-2 Round of 16 encounter, while Switzerland showed tremendous resilience to eliminate Colombia in a tense penalty shootout after the match finished goalless.
The two sides will now face off at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with a coveted place in the semi-finals on the line. Although Switzerland have enjoyed an impressive campaign, history favours La Albiceleste, who have never lost to the Swiss in seven previous meetings, including two victories at the FIFA World Cup.

Australia vs Switzerland: All Previous meetings
The first meeting between the two nations came during the group stage of the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England. Argentina controlled the contest and secured a comfortable 2-0 victory to begin the rivalry on a winning note. The result also marked their first triumph over Switzerland on football’s biggest stage
After a gap of 14 years, the teams met again in Buenos Aires in 1980 for an international friendly. Argentina produced one of their most dominant displays in the history of the fixture, cruising to an emphatic 5-0 victory with an outstanding attacking performance that left Switzerland with little chance of mounting a response
The rivalry resumed in Basel four years later in 1984. Despite playing away from home, Argentina once again showcased their superiority, securing a disciplined 2-0 victory through an organised defensive display and clinical finishing in front of goal.
The Swiss finally managed to halt Argentina’s winning run when the two sides met in May 1990. Switzerland matched the reigning world champions throughout the contest and earned a deserved 1-1 draw, recording their first positive result in the fixture.
Seventeen years later in 2007 the teams met again in another friendly. Much like their previous encounter, neither side could find a final breakthrough despite creating several opportunities, and the contest ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
Their penultimate meeting took place in Bern in 2012, where Lionel Messi delivered a masterclass. The Argentine captain scored all three goals, including a stoppage-time penalty, to complete a memorable hat-trick and inspire La Albiceleste to a 3-1 victory after Switzerland had briefly levelled the scores.
The most recent encounter came in the Round of 16 at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Switzerland frustrated Argentina for almost two hours with a resolute defensive display before Lionel Messi produced a moment of brilliance in extra time, setting up Ángel Di María to score the decisive goal in the 118th minute. The narrow victory sent Argentina into the quarter-finals as they eventually finished runners-up in the tournament.
