Argentina and Switzerland set for third World Cup meeting.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is moving towards its final stages, with the competition now underway and its quarter-final fixtures in progress. One of the most anticipated fixtures, the Argentina national football team will face Switzerland at the Kansas City Stadium in Missouri, USA.

Argentina, the reigning champions, entered the competition with high expectations to defend their title, to become only the third nation to achieve the feat. The side had a dominant group stage campaign, led by captain Lionel Messi, finishing as group leaders, unbeaten.

They were massively tested in the knockout stage, with tournament debutant Cape Verde providing a difficult challenge, with Argentina securing a 3-2 victory at extra time. Argentina made one of the biggest World Cup comebacks, defeating Egypt 3-2, after being 2-0 down, scoring three goals in 15 minutes.

Switzerland, led by manager Murat Yakin, will target a historic deep run to establish the nation’s status as a formidable side at the international footballing stage. The side had an exceptional start to the tournament, finishing as table-toppers.

They found their rhythm in the knockout rounds, securing a comfortable 2-0 victory against Algeria in the Round of 32. Switzerland then won 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout against Colombia in the Round of 16, after the game ended 0-0 in regular time, securing their place in the quarter-finals after 72 years.

Both nations are set to meet at the World Cup for a third time. Their first outing came in the 1966 World Cup group stage, with Argentina winning 2-0. They then played at the 2014 World Cup Round of 16, with Argentina securing a dramatic 1-0 victory led by an 118th-minute match-winner from Ángel Di María.
