Fans especially those of the Mariners took to social media to express their views on the historic development.
Another landmark move took place in Indian football, as Mohun Bagan officially merged with ATK in an announcement made this afternoon. Founded in 1889, its association with the two-time ISL champions comes as a remarkable decision taken with respect to the integration of one of the most prominent Indian clubs into the top football league of the country. RPSG Group will now become the 80% majority stakeholder with the Mohun Bagan Football Club (India) Private Limited owning the rest 20% of the shares. This new amalgamation would come into existence from 1 June 2020 and it would compete in the Indian Super League from next season. It will also include the brand names of both the clubs. The President Praful Patel said, "I congratulate the fans of legendary Mohun Bagan club and Hero ISL club ATK on the merger. I am sure officials of both clubs have kept the best interests of fans and the larger interest of Indian football in mind while arriving at a well thought out decision. Personally I feel that when tradition and legacy is backed by corporate backing, magic can be created. I wish the new merged entity all the very best in the future." General Secretary Kusal Das also weighed in his thoughts. He remarked, "I am certain this is going to be one of the most historic developments in the annals of Indian footballing history. I commend the authorities of both clubs for displaying vision, congratulate both sets of fans and wish them a happy and prosperous ‘marriage.’" Decisions of such magnitude often send social media abuzz and in this instance, we are witnessing something similar with various people venting their thoughts on Twitter. It must have obviously come as a whammy for both sets of supporters as a complete merger of two very popular clubs from the Mecca of football in India is going to take some time to get used to.
