Los Blancos’ rivals are ahead of them in a race to sign the midfielder.

According to The Athletic, Barcelona have joined Real Madrid in the race to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

The Catalan club has already started preliminary conversations with the player’s agents to examine the financial and sporting terms of a possible blockbuster transfer to Camp Nou.

The appeal of the club is huge for the 30-year-old, who will be reunited with eight of his international colleagues from Spain’s recent World Cup victory, including Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Gavi.

For months, it seemed like Los Blancos were the only viable option for the City star. Real Madrid have been negotiating behind the scenes on a contract, convinced that personal issues will not be an issue for the former Atletico Madrid player. However, the failure of an official agreement between the teams has allowed Joan Laporta and co. to strike.

City officials are fully aware of the interest of both clubs and have apparently taken steps to slow down discussions with Madrid. Meanwhile, the Spanish midfielder has been in negotiations with Los Blancos for weeks.

Injuries forcing Barcelona to look in the market

According to the Athletic, Barcelona’s new market urgency stems from a mounting injury issue in the centre of the park. With Frenkie de Jong out for an extended period due to a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee, the club lacks an established world-class pivot to anchor the squad. Rodri, who has only 12 months left on his present deal at the Etihad, is seen as the final answer.

Despite his accomplishments in England, the lure of LaLiga remains the last chapter he wants to write. Barcelona’s pursuit is a gamble, necessitating the sale of crucial assets to balance the finances, but the chance to beat their everlasting rivals for the Ballon d’Or winner is too tempting to pass up.

Who is leading the race between Real Madrid and Barca for Rodri?

Both clubs are going head to head, with Rodri having the final say.

How much do Manchester City want for Rodri?

According to the source, they are asking for at least €60 million.
