Brazil have won the FIFA World Cup for a record five times.
Norway, who have never progressed beyond the Round of 16 in FIFA World Cup history, will be hoping to script history by becoming the first team in their nation’s history to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Standing in their way, however, is a formidable Brazilian side in a Round of 16 clash scheduled to take place at the MetLife Stadium in New York, United States, on July 5. The winners of the encounter will book a place in the quarterfinals, where they will face either Mexico or England.
Brazil, once considered favorites heading into almost every edition of the World Cup, have failed to progress beyond the quarterfinals in each of the last two tournaments. This time around, however, Carlo Ancelotti’s side have looked much stronger and have firmly established themselves as genuine title contenders with their performances so far.
After topping their group, Brazil were handed an early scare in the Round of 32 against Japan after falling behind in the first half. However, the Selecao responded brilliantly after the break, scoring twice in the second half to complete the comeback and seal their place in the last 16.
Norway, meanwhile, have been creating history ever since qualifying for the tournament. Competing at the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 28 years, the Vikings have matched some of the world’s best teams and have shown why they are such a difficult side to beat. Their Round of 32 encounter against the Ivory Coast was a tightly contested affair, with Erling Haaland scoring late in the second half to secure victory before celebrating with Norway’s fans by performing the famous Viking Row.
Here are five key battles that could prove decisive when these two nations meet in New York on July 5.
5. Antonio Nusa vs Danilo

Antonio Nusa has been one of Norway’s brightest performers throughout the tournament, although his first goal contribution only arrived in the previous match when he scored a brilliant goal to hand his side a crucial lead. Blessed with exceptional pace and flair, Nusa thrives in one-on-one situations and possesses the dribbling ability to beat defenders with ease.
He will come up against Danilo, one of the most experienced players in the Brazilian squad. A versatile defender, Danilo is renowned for his positional discipline, aerial strength, and physical presence. However, with age naturally affecting his recovery speed, he can struggle against quick and agile wingers, an area Nusa will look to exploit.
4. Martin Odegaard vs Casemiro
Casemiro, the man who sparked Brazil’s comeback against Japan in the Round of 32, has endured a mixed World Cup campaign. While he has delivered in certain moments, including scoring in the previous match, there have also been occasions where he has struggled with the intensity of the tournament. At times, he has looked vulnerable positionally and has been below his usual standards in possession.
Martin Odegaard, meanwhile, has been Norway’s creative heartbeat in midfield and has already registered three assists in the tournament. His exceptional vision in the final third and ability to split defenses with line-breaking passes have been key to Norway’s attacking success. Odegaard will also look to use his aggressive pressing to force mistakes from Casemiro, whose passing has occasionally lacked its usual precision during the tournament.
3. Matheus Cunha vs Kristoffer Ajer
Despite failing to score against Japan, Matheus Cunha remains a vital part of Carlo Ancelotti’s attacking setup. His exceptional pace, intelligent movement inside the box, and ability to operate both as a traditional striker and a false nine make him a constant threat. Cunha’s movement and link-up play with his fellow attackers will pose a significant challenge for Kristoffer Ajer against Brazil.
Although Ajer is an accomplished defender who excels in aerial duels and reading danger through timely interceptions, he has occasionally struggled against strikers who drift away from their natural positions. His aggressive approach can sometimes lead to lapses in concentration; mistakes he simply cannot afford against a forward of Cunha’s quality.
2. Vinicius Junior vs Marcus Pedersen

Vinicius Junior has once again shown why he is regarded as one of the best performers on the biggest stages. The Brazilian winger has either scored or assisted in three of Brazil’s four matches so far and has consistently been one of their standout players. His explosive acceleration, outstanding dribbling ability, and clinical finishing from the left flank have made him a nightmare for defenders throughout the tournament.
He is expected to come up against Marcus Pedersen, who produced a solid display against Yan Diomande in Norway’s previous outing but now faces an even tougher challenge. Pedersen is physically strong and possesses impressive recovery pace, an important asset given his tendency to push forward whenever opportunities arise. However, he has shown occasional positional weaknesses against inverted wingers who cut inside, something Vinicius excels at. This promises to be one of the most exciting battles of the match.
1. Erling Haaland vs Gabriel Magalhaes

Perhaps the most eagerly anticipated individual battle of the contest will see Erling Haaland go head-to-head with Gabriel Magalhaes. The pair have built a fierce rivalry through their club meetings and rarely shy away from physical duels whenever they face each other.
Haaland’s intelligent movement, ruthless finishing, immense physical strength, and pace make him arguably the best number nine in world football today. Gabriel, meanwhile, is renowned for his ability to read danger, produce crucial blocks, and make timely interceptions to snuff out attacks before they develop.
Given the competitive nature of both players, plenty of physical exchanges, and perhaps even a few bookings could be on the cards. One thing is certain: both Haaland and Gabriel will leave everything on the pitch in their pursuit of a place in the quarterfinals.
