The 47-year-old came close to winning the coveted league title in the 2013-14 season with the Reds.

Over the past few days, it has been understood that the football associations of various European countries are beginning to consider cancelling the ill-fated 2019-20 season which has already suffered immensely at the hands of the global Coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who is currently at the helm of Premier League outfit Leicester City, revealed his opinion over the fate of Premier League and his former side.

The Dutch Eredivisie has already been cancelled with no winner named, while the French Ligue 1 decided to award the title to Paris-Saint Germain, who were the table-toppers according to a performance index - the number of points per game weighed by head-to-head record.

Meanwhile, millions of fans across the world are awaiting the fate of the English Premier League (PL), where Liverpool currently holds a mind-blowing 25-point lead at the top of the table. It is yet to be understood as to whether the English Football Association (the FA) will consider handing the Reds their maiden PL title, or whether they will cancel the season without a winner.

If the FA decides to create a performance index just like in Ligue 1, Liverpool would undoubtedly be the champions as they have lost only a total of five points across the 29 Matchdays in which they featured so far in 2019-20. However, if they decide to follow the path of the Eredivisie by cancelling the season without a winner, it would be a case of the title getting snatched from Liverpool’s grasp again - similar to what happened in the 2013-14 season.

Brendan Rodgers, who coached the Reds in the 2013-14 season, admitted that it would be an "absolute shame" if his former club were denied the chance to clinch the Premier League title this season, in an interview with television presenter Eamonn Holmes in his podcast "Eamonn and the Gaffers".

"They (Liverpool) have clearly been consistently the best team," he said, before adding, "The level that they've been playing at, the quality - they've just been absolutely fantastic. So it would be an absolute shame if they don't get the chance to to lift the title."

"They've been waiting so, so long - they're deserving of it. But Jurgen will be like everyone, hoping that we can get back playing but obviously in a safe environment," Brendan Rodgers further added.

The 47-year-old also revealed his feelings on how the league title slipped out of their hands, six years ago.

"It just wasn't to be for us and of course you have moments where you think back to that season. We were so close, and it would have been brilliant for us to have done it. But it wasn't to be so you just have to move on," he explained.

Brendan Rodgers led his current club Leicester City to a respectable third place in the 2019-20 Premier League season, before COVID-19 led to an indefinite suspension of football and life in general, all over the world. The Premier League had since clarified that they remain committed to completing the season - but with France and Netherlands cancelling their respective leagues, there have been fears that the PL may also have to cancel the ongoing season.

As mentioned earlier, Liverpool currently lead the race to the title with 82 points from 29 matches. At second place is defending champions Manchester City with 57 points (28 matches).
