Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have ruled Germany’s Bundesliga. Having clinched a total of 24 league titles in 28 Bundesliga seasons. Because of their long-standing rivalry, Der Klassiker is popularly referred to as the German El Clasico.
It all started in 1965 when Dortmund earned their first win against Bayern Munich. The rivalry was considered healthy at the time, but it heated up in 1990. There have also been many noteworthy games, such as Bayern Munich’s 12-0 demolition of Dortmund and an eight-goal thriller that ended in a 4-4 draw. This derby also has a dark side, as players have been engaged in on-field confrontations, such as Olivier Kahn flying kung-fu kick at Chapuisat and biting Heiko Herrlich’s ear.
Finally, Dortmund slipped down the pecking order after their 20s, and the Bundesliga was heavily dominated by Bayern, which inspired many great youngsters to favour a move to Munich, and Dortmund, who are recognised for developing homegrown talented players, saw their best players leaving the club at their peak, and this is what fueled the rivalry.
