Canada vs Morocco - Top five players to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash ft. Ismael Saibari & Jonathan David

Morocco finished fourth in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
After an extraordinary 48-team group stage that saw several underdogs punch above their weight, followed by a Round of 32 that produced a number of major upsets, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is now down to its final 16 teams, all battling for football’s biggest prize.
Morocco, who finished fourth at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, will take on co-hosts Canada, who are looking to script more history after reaching the knockout stages for the first time in their history. The Round of 16 clash between the two sides is scheduled to take place at Houston Stadium in Texas, United States, on July 4. The winners will book a place in the quarterfinals, where either Paraguay or France awaits.
Canada, one of the three co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the USA and Mexico, began their campaign with a draw before registering a victory in their second group-stage fixture. They progressed from the group with four points from three matches despite losing their final game against Switzerland. In the Round of 32, they produced late drama by scoring a stoppage-time winner against South Africa to book their place in the last 16.
Morocco, meanwhile, finished their group-stage campaign unbeaten with seven points, drawing against Brazil before defeating Scotland and Haiti. In the Round of 32, they were handed a difficult test against the Netherlands but overcame Ronald Koeman’s side on penalties after Bono’s heroics, having trailed 1-0 until second-half stoppage time.
Here are five key players who could have a major influence on the contest when these two nations battle for a place in the quarterfinals.
Top five players to watch out for in Canada vs Morocco
| S.No. | Player Name | Country |
| 1 | Ismael Saibari | Morocco |
| 2 | Jonathan David | Canada |
| 3 | Brahim Diaz | Morocco |
| 4 | Alphonso Davies | Canada |
| 5 | Noussair Mazraoui | Morocco |
5. Noussair Mazraoui
While much of the attention has been on Achraf Hakimi, Noussair Mazraoui has quietly been one of Morocco’s standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Naturally a right-back but deployed on the left, the Manchester United defender has been consistently impressive, particularly during the Round of 32 victory over the Netherlands.
Mazraoui is an extremely versatile defender who can operate across the backline and frequently steps into midfield during transitions to offer an additional passing option while building attacks. He is highly effective with his timing in tackles and interceptions and could prove crucial in dealing with the threat posed by Canada’s Tajon Buchanan.
4. Alphonso Davies

One of the biggest positives for Canada and head coach Jesse Marsch was the return of captain Alphonso Davies during the previous match against South Africa. Despite playing only around 15 minutes, Davies made an immediate impact and significantly improved Canada’s overall performance.
Blessed with exceptional pace and agility, Davies is capable of operating as a full-back, wing-back, or winger. Few players in world football are better at carrying the ball from deep areas than Davies, while his attacking qualities allow him to either cut inside and threaten the goal or stay wide to deliver dangerous crosses into the box.
3. Brahim Diaz

Brahim Diaz, one of Morocco’s most technically gifted players, is yet to fully hit top form at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as he did in his impressive 2025 AFCON campaign. Although the Real Madrid attacker has already registered two assists, he has the quality to be far more influential in front of goal.
Diaz is naturally two-footed and equally comfortable shooting with either foot. His low center of gravity allows him to glide past defenders in tight spaces, while his dribbling ability makes him a constant threat in one-on-one situations. Alongside his technical quality, he also possesses the vision to play line-breaking passes and deliver dangerous crosses into the penalty area.
2. Jonathan David

Jonathan David has endured an inconsistent 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign so far despite scoring three goals in four matches. However, all three of those goals came in Canada’s victory over Qatar, with the striker failing to find the net in the other three games.
Even so, David remains Canada’s first-choice striker thanks to the qualities he consistently brings to the team. His relentless work rate sees him lead the press from the front, while his intelligent movement inside the penalty area allows him to lose defenders and attack crosses with excellent timing.
1. Ismael Saibari

It has been a remarkable few weeks for Ismael Saibari. After winning the Eredivisie, winning the player of the season, securing a high-profile move to Bayern Munich, and starring for Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the attacking midfielder’s rise has continued at an extraordinary pace.
Saibari scored in each of Morocco’s three group-stage matches before calmly converting the decisive penalty in the Round of 32 shootout against the Netherlands, stepping up when his country needed him most.
Although naturally an attacking midfielder, Saibari has excelled in a false-nine role thanks to his pace, ball-carrying ability, and physical presence. He is equally capable of holding up play by bringing teammates into the attack, while his intelligent movement into the penalty area and clinical finishing have been on display throughout the tournament, particularly against Brazil and Scotland in the first two group stage games.
