The Blues edged a disjointed Red Devils side.
Chelsea took on Manchester United in a crucial Matchday 9 fixture of the Premier League 2026-27 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, 2026. Two second-half goals secured a 2-0 win for the Blues.
After a lively start to the contest, Matheus Cunha gave his side the lead in the 34th minute, although the goal was ruled out by VAR due to offside. Chelsea had a good chance when the ball hit Moises Caicedo and crashed against the outside of Senne Lammens’ post.
Following a goalless first half, Morgan Rogers found the breakthrough five minutes after the restart. He made a brilliant run past several Manchester United defenders before lifting the ball over Lammens’ head and into the back of the net.
After Lisandro Martinez conceded a penalty and was sent off for a challenge on Wesley Fofana, Cole Palmer doubled the Blues’ lead from the spot. That goal sealed a dominant win for the hosts. Estevao found the back of the net in the 71st minute, but it was ruled out for offside.
Six things we learned from Chelsea vs Manchester United clash:
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
1. Estevao impresses on first start

Estevao has had to wait for his chances this season, and the young Brazilian was given his first start of the season against United. The 19-year-old grabbed this chance with both hands. He was lively in the first half, even finding the back of the net in the 15th minute, although he was ruled offside.
By the time he was withdrawn, Estevao had registered the most touches in the opposition’s box. He also completed two successful crosses into the box, creating a joint-highest three chances.
The youngster scored what would have been a deserved goal in the 71st minute, but it was once again ruled out for a tight offside. He had another brilliant effort in the 85th minute, but it was denied by a brilliant save from Lammens.
2. Defensive disasterclass
Chelsea and Manchester United have had two of the worst defences in the league this season, managing just one clean sheet between them ahead of this fixture. Today, their collective inability to defend was exposed on multiple occasions.
Wesley Fofana was lax in possession and lost the ball in a dangerous area, allowing Amad Diallo to test Mike Penders. Fofana had another howler in the 42nd minute, losing possession to Amad Diallo. Thankfully for the Frenchman, Diallo missed from close range.
Harry Maguire also had a moment of confusion in his half, allowing Pedro Neto to flash a dangerous-looking shot across the face of Senne Lammens’ goal. After the first half somehow ended goalless, United’s defence was punished by Morgan Rogers in the 50th minute.
3. Martinez’s moment of madness

On the subject of defensive howlers, Lisandro Martinez took the top prize with two moments of madness. He first saw a yellow card for angrily pulling back Morgan Rogers.
Moments later, he, for some reason known best to him, decided to crash into Wesley Fofana with a leading forearm to the Frenchman’s face. The incident was referred to VAR, and, after an on-field review, the Argentine was sent off, and a penalty was awarded to Chelsea, which was promptly converted by Cole Palmer.
4. Lavia steals the show

Romeo Lavia has found it difficult to get going with the Blues owing to multiple injury issues. The Belgian was given the nod to start in the middle of the park today, and he put in one of the best performances of his career.
He had the most defensive contributions as well as completed the most passes, completely dictating the tempo of the match. He also regularly won back possession in midfield, setting up Morgan Rogers’ opening goal.
A ready-made replacement for Enzo Fernandez.
5. Bruno’s mind elsewhere?
After being dropped against Bournemouth, Bruno Fernandes returned to the starting lineup wearing the captain’s armband. However, he was far from his mercurial best against the Blues, firing wide from what was one of the best chances of the match.
He continued to put in the effort every time, but was careless in possession and also put in a few dangerous tackles. He gave the ball away, leading to Estevao’s goal, though it was ruled out for a tight offside.
It looked clear that the fiasco involving Michael Carrick had gone to his head. With a January exit being touted, it remains to be seen whether the Portuguese will finish the season at Old Trafford.
6. How much longer for Carrick?

Having already led United to their worst-ever Premier League start, the Red Devils’ performance today has further deepened the hole for Michael Carrick. Media reports suggest that the United hierarchy have opted to keep their faith in Carrick, but the visitors’ pathetic and disjointed performance must surely be blamed on the manager.
With Eddie Howe being strongly linked with Manchester United, time is running out – or has it run out already? – for Michael Carrick to keep this sinking ship afloat.
