Chelsea have signed several new players over the summer.

Chelsea have dipped into the summer transfer window, spending big money to sign several players to improve their first team for the upcoming English Premier League season. Under new head coach Xabi Alonso, who joined from Real Madrid, the Blues are seeking to usher in a new era of success under the BlueCo ownership.

Alonso had a fairly underwhelming spell with Los Blancos, but the former Spain international remains a highly sought-after head coach, following the success he enjoyed at Bayer Leverkusen. The 44-year-old tactician has already overseen a change in the Blues’ transfer approach, bringing in experienced players like Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck.

However, while these veterans are likely to play a bit-part role, some of the other new signings, such as Pep Chavarria, Morgan Rogers, and Maxence Lacroix, are expected to walk straight into the starting lineup.

Let’s look at the expected tactical approach that will be taken by Alonso and the playing XI that he is likely to stick with.

3-4-2-1: Robert Sanchez; Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, Maxence Lacroix; Reece James, Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez; Malo Gusto; Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers; Joao Pedro

Alonso is expected to stick with the core of the Chelsea squad. With Alonso using three centre-backs as he did at Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid, he will go with Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, and Maxence Lacroix in central defence.

Jorrel Hato is an option off the bench both at central defence and at left wing-back. Pep Chavarria will be the preferred wing-back on the left side, although Alonso might also go with Malo Gusto. Reece James will start on the right side.

Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez will form the midfield fulcrum, although there is still some doubt whether the Argentine midfielder will remain at Stamford Bridge. Cole Palmer will start in an advanced role down the left, along with Morgan Rogers on the right. Joao Pedro will be the team’s starting centre-forward, with Danny Welbeck an option off the bench.

Xabi Alonso’s tactics and style of play

During his time in the Bundesliga, Alonso developed an effective tactical approach that combined the best of Pep Guardiola’s and Jurgen Klopp’s philosophies. His players demonstrate strong positional awareness, while he also employs the “Gegenpressing” philosophy perfected by Klopp.

He usually goes with the 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 formation. For this to work, he requires effective ball-playing defenders who are comfortable on the ball. He also needs his midfielders to be dynamic so that they can drive up and down the pitch to properly press the opponent.

The wing-backs are inverted, mirroring the style developed by Guardiola at Manchester City, and assist the two players in the middle of the park.

What formation will Alonso use at Chelsea?

Alonso is expected to deploy a 3‑4‑3 or 3‑4‑2‑1 system at the Blues.
