Aston Villa are back in the Champions League tonight, when they face Club Brugge at Jan Breydelstadion.
Unai Emery’s team did not compete in the competition last season, but they did win the Europa League. Meanwhile, Club Brugge were ousted in the knockout stage by Atletico Madrid.
Team Brugge have had a solid start to the Belgian top division. The team are presently third in the table with 12 points from 15 possible and only three points behind first-place Gent.
The host team are unlikely to recall their previous encounters with Villa warmly. They were defeated in two of their three matches in 2024-25, losing 3-1 at home in March 2025 and 3-0 in England the same month.
Aston Villa will be keen for a break from their struggles in England, having gone winless in their opening three league games.
A 1-0 defeat to Arsenal was reasonable considering that they are presently the defending champions. However, they also fell 4-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion on the opening weekend and were held 0-0 by Hull City last Saturday.
Unai Emery will be quite disappointed with his team’s start to 2026-27. But supporters will remember that he has often succeeded in Europe, as seen by his five Europa League medals.
Villa are going to be missing Amadou Onana for much of the season due to a knee injury.
