Cody Gakpo’s injury during the Netherlands’ UEFA Nations League encounter against Serbia delivered Liverpool a severe setback during the international break. Gakpo was replaced after less than 20 minutes, adding to Andoni Iraola’s mounting fears over fitness in the wake of Swedish sensation Alexander Isak’s recent setback.
After barely 17 minutes of play, Gakpo was forced to leave the field while the game was tied in Belgrade. Gakpo tried to play on, but five minutes later he indicated to the bench that he was unable to do so. Ruben van Bommel took his spot after he went down to receive treatment.

Liverpool had already lost Alexander Isak, so this setback is another blow. Due to a thigh ailment, Isak departed the Sweden camp on Saturday night.
In addition, Jeremie Frimpong was left off the most recent matchday roster; however, it’s still unclear if this was due to a fitness concern.
Iraola will now eagerly await a thorough medical evaluation of Gakpo in the hopes that the problem is not serious.
Gakpo talked about his recent difficulties and dedication to Liverpool in an interview with The Telegraph before the injury. Thinking back on his choice to remain, the player acknowledged:
“It was a difficult summer for me, and my family, and everything surrounding football and life. It’s a very long story. The summer was very tough regarding everything. I just let everything be and see how it came and it worked out in this way, which now it is what it is.
“We have to do the things we can control to the best of our ability. That’s the only thing I can do and the rest is out of our hands. If I have no control over the situation, I will not worry. I just do my job.”
