Top five youngsters to look out for at Copa America 2021
The The 47th edition of the tournament is slated to begin on June 13.
The Copa America brings together some of the biggest talents from around South America. Over the years, the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Angel Di Maria have played in this tournament. However, In this edition of the competition, a number of mercurial talents will get their first taste of a major international tournament.
Here are the top five youngsters to look out for in Copa America 2021.
5. Darwin Nunez
The 21-year-old attacker has impressed this season for his club, on both domestic and European stages. Nunez’s throwback approach to the number 9 role has brought him to the attention of top European clubs. The Uruguayan will hope to impress at Copa America by playing beside Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani to ensure that his merit rises even further.
Nunez has had 21 goal involvements for Benfica this season. He will look to add another dimension to what is already a strong Uruguay side.
4. Vinicius Jr
The Brazilian attacker has shown a lot of promise at Real Madrid but could be just about ready to burst. The 20-year-old will be hoping to take the baton from the likes of Neymar and will see Copa America in 2021 as the perfect opportunity to do so. He will have plenty of opportunities to prove himself throughout the tournament and will be hoping to impress his coaches.
3. Renan Lodi
This season has proven that Renan Lodi is a star waiting to burst into life. He kept Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid alive in the La Liga title race with a vital goal against Osasuna. His goal proved to be crucial in La Rojablancos' title charge. While the left-back has spent most of this season on the bench, the Brazilian has shown his quality whenever he was called upon.
The Copa America could prove to be the perfect opportunity to stake his claim for a more permanent spot in the Atletico side.
2. Federico Valverde
It is often easy to forget that Fede Valverde is only 22-year-old. The Uruguayan midfielder has proven himself to be a crucial cog in the Real Madrid machine with his calm and composed midfield performances. The Copa America 2021 will be the youngster’s first major tournament with La Celeste where he will likely form a midfield partnership with another youngster, Rodrigo Bentancur.
1. Lautaro Martinez
A Serie A title winner with Inter Milan in the previous season, Lautaro Martinez is quickly developing into a household name. The Argentinian attacker formed a lethal partnership with Romelu Lukaku at Inter and will be looking to carry his form into the Copa America alongside the likes of Leo Messi.
With 19 goals and 11 assists in the previous league campaign, Martinez could prove to be crucial to Argentina’s hopes of finally bringing home a major international trophy.
